Starting on the bogies for the Sherman. In the lower right is the kit part. They would have you add some 1/16" pieces to the front, drive a nail through each end piece, through the wheel and into the tank side. Not to realistic. The top two are the front and back, my solution. I couldn't figure out how to cut the compound shapes so I made them out of cut and folded paper. You can see the patterns

More details on the backside, including bolts on the return wheel gears and an access door for the engine. That may end up getting covered by a deflector shield that diesel powered Sherman tanks used to keep exhaust fumes from getting sucked back into the intake filters.

The transmission cover at the front (left) has multiple bolts, as well as the rear return wheel bracket.

I'm back after a brief pause. Spent time in Kennesaw Georgia at the National Battlefield. Very interesting site and history. Anyways, I found a company Vectorcut (www.vectorcut.com) who makes laser cut nuts, tools, building, etc. They perfectly fit the bill for some of the details I needed for the Sherman.

More of the engine deck. This deck shows that this model represents an M4-A2 diesel powered tank. Most diesel tanks were shipped to our allies, but the Marines used them at Tarawa and Okinowa. This one will be a Marine tank.

A few more details for the turret top. And yet a few more to go.

Detail of the driver's hatch showing the periscope, hinge and spring. The spring is thin wire wrapped around a pin. Each hatch has 8 parts in addition to white glue to create the "bump" to allow headroom for the driver. Materials are solder, basswood, card stock, dowells and wire.

More of the front end. The silver shape around the bow machine gun is solder. It represents the snapdown fixture for a canvas hood to protect the machine gun.

The front end. I had to reshape the transmission cover, as it wasn't round enough. I cut shapes out of card stock, glued on either side and filled with lightweight spackle. You can kind of see the original shape (wood) and the new shape (white).

More Sherman details. These are the left and right final drives. Each is basswood, dowell and card stock. 8 pieces in each one. Should be substantial enough to handle the strain of the tracks.
