What man? All I see is a lumber yard!;-) This is looking really good. I wonder what Dave Diels, who drew the plans, would say? When I posted the shot of the Tigercat's bones on the Diels kit builders Yahoo site, he was extraordinarily complimentary about my work but also added the caveat that his plans are drawn for flying models and all those extra stringers are not his idea. Plywood probably isn't either but plans are what one makes of them and this looks like a tremendous amount of fun. I might also add that your work is improving and each giant looks better than the previous one. Bravo!

bringing out the big guns!

Diels plans are for flying models, but who's to say this isn't going to fly. just need a little extra power. Briggs and Stratton? I have a 1.6L VW block up North...

Bill - I always enjoy your king size builds but this... This is incredible! Keep 'em coming.
BriandKilby08-Feb-13 09:33
how do you do the stringers that big, bill? you must use whole rolls of tissue at times!
lukebozek108-Feb-13 10:09
Bill you continue to amaze. That probably could be flown by a small child.

I cut 1/4 pine ply into 5/16" by 1/4" strips, 48" long. The formoers are notches like any average Guillow's or (this one is Diels) plane. I glue and screw each contact point with yellow glue, then a #4 by 5/8" panhead screw. Plane is finally cover in cotton muslin, and thinned laquer is used to seal...

excellent!

Better photo of the belly... The airplane's belly...

how do you get the stringers, which are solid and stiff wood, to fit the fuselage, bill?
TJH07-Jan-15 21:29
Ditto what pfinn said... Looking great!

Brian: Did you read the answer Bill gave?
BriandKilby08-Jan-15 07:47
I didn't know I was repeating myself.

When plywood is cut to 1/4" by 5/16" it becomes spagetti like in it's flexibility. On this plane all the skinny stuff was cut to 48"... On the newer 10 foot jobs we're cutting stringers 3/8" by 1/4 by 8 foot... You can nearly ty a knot in em when they're that long. It's when you try to bend a 4" long piece that you get in trouble.

thanks for the heads up bill.
