How they look coming out of the molds. These are for Moostang's Mossie and P 39. Molds are re-useable.

Does it dry very hard like a plastic?
David Duckett31-Jan-08 00:00
Very hard, but easy to sand and carve.

Thanks for sharing your technique. I think I will try this out in addition to the other methods that I am working on.

Wow. I feel like a child waking up on X-mas morning. They look awesome.

David, Has anyone suggested molding the cowling and glueing it on and then sanding to desired shape? I don't know how heavy the resin is but on a static model I shouldnt make a difference.

It could be done. You would have to use quite a bit and it would indeed be heavy. The good thing is that the stuff cures much faster if there's a lot of it involved and it does get quite warm during curing.

To mold a large part and leave the middle hollow you would need either a resin that will stay put on vertical surfaces or to fill the center area with foam (a handful of packing peanuts from a recent splurge on eBay?) or something that can be removed after the resin has cured. Another option is to vacuum mold the part over the top of a solid mold. I am currently working on all of the above methods and have had some success.

Next up the P-39 with Soviet color scheme. This extra set is gonna come in sooooo....handy. Just separating pieces, notching etc., need new CA and wood glue as I've been away too long. Hope to post build pictures soon. Got to say, the Mossie formers were like bricks but with this baby they almost fall off the balsa sheets.

Dave, what material is poured into the plastic sheets and do you pre-coat the plastic for a release agent?
