moostang51 | 03-Jan-08 20:22 | The Mos now becomes a scratch build. Kit balsawas too hard and "die crushed." Two pieces of 3/32' stock will be laminated and cut out with a scroll saw to achieve uniformity. |
SteveM | 03-Jan-08 20:38 | The great thing about kits like this is that any material you don't use (even if die crushed) still has resale value. |
David Duckett | 04-Jan-08 06:50 | Are you making all the balsa pieces? |
moostang51 | 04-Jan-08 17:21 | Seemed to be the only option to me. The dark balsa on the bottom is the kit supplied balsa. Very hard and grainy. Even with sanding the backs of the sheets I wasn't satisfied.
Trying to replicate the plan view of the piece after removing from sheet, splintering wood, cracks.....hello fireplace. Cut the top sheet today. From start to finish, with copying, glue up and final exact, and I mean exact former shape...2 hours 45 minutes. BTW, laminated balsa on a scroll saw, with variable speeds utilized probably warranted a veneer blade. Don't have that in my shop, ergo #11 blade used. Not as fast but results were great. I'll post later. |
