Looks like you have "Broad-Tailed" hummingbirds (4 1/4" long) - very similar to our Eastern "Ruby Throated" hummingbirds (3 3/4" long), but separate ranges. When you say they were "going at it", that is true - they are very hostile and aggressive and quick an eager to quarrel and fight when they claim ownership of a patch of blossoms, or sugar water feeder, and defend it from other hummingbirds, even when not actively feeding.
