Accidental Christmas gift to myself. One has to wonder how by accident you get a gift to yourself. Made lowball offer on Ebay and they accepted. Cost of shipping had to be more than my offer. I guess some thing were just meant to be. Merry Christmas everyone.

Sounds like you got a deal! I'm really wondering about some of the models I'm seeing on ebay. I just purchased a classic Guillows SE5 and the shipping was almost as much as the price of the plane. I also see people adjusting the shipping amount up if it looks like the model isn't going to sell for what they want. Seems a little shady to me. There is one that is selling right now (B-17) at $89, but they want to charge $62 for shipping! Has anyone else experienced this?

EBay automatically calculates priority mail rates based on the size of the package the seller posts. Many sellers don't pay much attention to that but many also inflate shipping costs. If a shipping cost seems excessive, skip it.

Dave, thanks for the information. I've never sold on ebay, so I wasn't aware that it was doing the calculation. I guess if it looks too good to be true, it probably is! :)

This was a very good deal. The contents were complete. I like to peruse the ebay listings paying attention to price, photos, shipping cost and seller feedback. This seller sold other items not related to the hobby and just wanted to move this item. This is a big part of the hobby for me. So much that I've never opened a sealed kit yet. This year, thanks to Christmas gifts, I will.

I've sold a few there. I usually go to the Post Office and find out how much 1st class shipping is to the furthest or most expensive place. 1st class has $100 insurance. That way I have a number to put in the add. They calculate by weight. And like DD said, some use that to make more money. $62 seems quite excessive. I went there yesterday for 2 Today's Hobbies kits, they were each $16.71 for first class.

USPS has a postage price calculator on line. If you have a scale you can plug in zip codes and know exactly what the shipping cost is.
