DOH!

This the one biggest drawback of Free Flight. Lack of control once in the air. Bit of a climb it appears. Or a very, very long stick.

There are no limbs the first 20' or so, which means a tall ladder before the long climb. Not only do I not have said ladder, but it's been a few years since I climbed trees and I don't think the risk is worth it. Maybe a good wind storm will come along soon and knock it down, I'll have to drop by the park from time to time and look.

Good news! Last night I heard a couple of strong gusts of wind in one of the rain showers that passed through. This morning I checked the park and found its limp, mangled, wet remains about 30' from the base of the tree. The tissue is a loss but must of the structure should be easy to repair. I'll post a picture when I get home tonight.

I am not trying to bust, ... but why fly near trees?
SteveM11-Mar-08 18:25
Around here trees are like weeds, forget to mow for a year or two and you have a forest instead of a grassy field. As you can see, even the local park has its fair share of trees. But this may all be a mute point as I have finally found in the city municipal code where it forbids flying airplanes in city parks. But then it also forbids swinging a golf club and people do that from time to time. I doubt I would ever get in trouble for brief weekend free flights, but any serious flying could get me in trouble and make a bad name for fliers in the area. I guess that means $58 to the AMA and a 15 minute drive to the aerodrome unless I can find somewhere else to fly.

What a country...laws against flying model planes...a plane flying park with a fee...my 8 acre meadow looks better every day!
SteveM11-Mar-08 19:21
I'm sure the law is there because someone was flying dangerously with a fast and noisy gas plane and someone got upset (or hurt) and it was deemed a dangerous activity. There is no fee to use the aerodrome, but as with many flying fields you are required to have an AMA membership. Being an AMA member means you are insured while flying in the approved field and if you act foolishly your membership can be revoked and now you cannot fly in the field. It is actually quite generous for the county to provide a significant amount of resources to a fairly small group of their park users. It is the $58 AMA membership that makes me cringe.

Making incandescent bulbs illegal, changing the TV frequencies so we have to all purchase converters or new televisions, gasoline at over $4 a gallon by the summer, but our oil in Alaska and off the Fl coast cannot be tapped, and rules a regulations about flying model planes. Great direction our country is taking!
