I can't continue on the THUD until it's warm enough outside to dope the pieces for covering so....

I've been doping the Hellcat indoors with the windows open. Sure does get smelly, but its that or wait till May.

I've got the same dilemma, but with the kids, doping indoors is out of the question. I'd like to get some silkspan on my planked and sealed (w/ nitrate dope) P-47. I'm thinking about laying down the fabric w/ 50/50 elmer's, then waiting for warmer days to seal w/ nitrate dope. Anybody see any problems with this idea?

I use gluestick and butyrate every time. It'll work fine. We only dope planes in the garage. If I even opened the dope can indoors there'd be trouble, mister...

Thanks Bill. I've been using nitrate for a while now and have been pretty happy with the results. I seem to recall that David has, at least on occasion, used nitrate as well and I'd guess that if he also doesn't see any problem with elmer's "sandwiched" between coats of nitrate, then I'd proceed confidently with the blessing of two model masters.

I did it only once and I didn't like the results. While it all looks fine the dope will further shrink the silkspan when you put it on and that can, and did, cause sections to lift from the frame, especially at junctions and curves which are more like ditches than oranges. I used butyrate for years but I changed to nitrate a couple of years ago and it's now all I use.

Thank you, David. I was afraid you'd say something like that. For the jug's (partially planked) wings, I sealed the wood and applied the silkspan w/ elmer's, but have been sealing the silkspan w/ nitrate. So far, no problems after two coats, but we'll see...
