A ball point pen is used because its rounded tip is easier on a surface whereas a pencil might tear the paper. Don C 06-Aug-18 17:58 Thanks, DD. I've been making stencils, but am going to give this a try. David Duckett 06-Aug-18 19:27 I've been doing it this way for years. You don't need a lot of pressure while using a ball point pen this way so tracing over a silkspan covered area is safe. Another point is that pencil tends to smudge so with multiple letters cover the ones not being painted with paper.
