The pilot, Major Charles Carpenter, got tired of observing the war, and wanted to participate. I believe he is credited with killing a few tanks and armored vehicles. This wasn't condoned by the higher brass. They wanted the observer planes to work in conjunction with the artillery. Freelancing was discouraged. But Major Carpenter convinced them he could do both.
