Looking good! I love this kit. I can't get it to fly - but it looks great. Can't wait to see it covered.

There is no reason why a Guillows P40 shouldn't fly quite well, even built straight from the box with the kit wood, but with a bit of judicious lightening (a lot is possible) it should fly much better. Any weight you manage to lose behind the center of gravity will mean less ballast in the nose and thus a lower all-up weight. It is a nice-looking plane certainly.

Hmmm - there is still almost a full month in the Guillow's challenge. Maybe I'll pick one up at the hobby shop.

What's the Guillows challenge?

The guillow's challenge is a yahoo group that does a "cookup" every year - they pick a series (this year it is the 500) and you build and fly the plane, record your time and send in pics. The winner wins a Guillow's kit, not sure which one, I think it is donated by the company. Here is a link: http://balsamodels.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=6308&sid=2e879613314103f6f83c31c687976e6c It is fun and adds a bit of competition to the hobby - several people who post here are in on it too.

Both of my P40s flew pretty good out of the box without lightening them. I used to go through the hassle of lightening them, but then realized the performance was not worth all the work and effort.

You know, I'll have to build one more of these for the challenge. A wise man recommended a great book - "Peanut Power" that I bought and totally devoured that has improved my building and trimming Kung Fu immeasurably.

Thanks for the link CPN. Maybe I can get a Hellcat finished and flown by the end of the month. So far I've only built and flown the P40 and the Hellcat from this series. I built a couple of Nakajima Rufes but neither flew. I doubt if they can actually be made to fly without extensive modification. I have a Stuka in a fairly advanced stage but it's another one I'm wary of trying to fly. The undercart looks much too vulnerable.

This is my first build and I am loving it! I see on R/C Groups a memebr named Truckerboy converts these into powered models, something I've always wanted to do. I've been doing alot of research and cant wait to get started on it. I'm just getting my feet wet with this plane.
