| LASTWOODSMAN | 18-Nov-16 21:22 | | I traced the outline of the top and bottom wing on two sheets of 8 1/2" X 17" scotch taped together. Then I traced in the squiggle lines for the different colored panels. Then I cut out each of the three different colors of tissue panels with a 1/8" extra on the side edges of the squiggles and 1 1/2" extra on front and rear edges. I glued the lightest tan colored panels on first with 50-50 white glue water mixture, by glueing only the top of all ribs and portions of ribs that the tissue covered, and the front and rear leading and trailing edges. This left tissue sticking straight out into mid air in places, but it held its place. I then took the next panel of increasing darkness - green - and sized it up to see how the overlap fit to the previously glued panel, and trimmed it up a little with curved scissors to maintain a consistent 1/8" overlap. Then I glued 50/50 over the 1/8" overlap edge of the dried panel and the rib and the rib portions and front and trailing edges that were to be covered with the new panel. The 1/8" edge sticking out in midair held its position even with the 50-50 glue on it, and when I laid the new panel on top of it, the 1/8" overlap glued together like a magnetic force - they were so attracted to each other! - I almost had to barely push the new panel down onto the dried tissue panel with my finger! Then I let it all dry and did the same thing with the final darkest color panels - brown. You can see that all the top surfaces of all the ribs have been glued to the different colored panels and there is a 1/8" darker colored overlap between the colors that is less visible if you put the darker panel over the lighter panel. Then I let it all dry, and cut off the excess tissue from the front and rear edges - for the front edge I use an exacto knife and a cutting board and steel ruler to get the straight separation between the top wing color and bottom wing color (having covered the bottom of the wings with tissue first of course), and used small curved scissors for the scallops of the rear edges, then a little 50-50 and water and my finger to smooth the tissue on the front and rear edges. I let it all dry and then spray misted it all with water and it shrunk perfectly! You can see the darker 1/8" overlap that is kept to a minimum when you lay darker colored panels on top of lighter colored panels. I positioned the great Dumas peel - stick decals (that I swear by) on top of the camo panels but they took away from the camo look, so I left them off. I'll pretend that the plane just came out of the factory.... |
