The only other tool I use for this is a "notcher", a piece of plywood with a strip of sandpaper glued to it. I normally use 3/32" stringers so the notcher is made from 3/32" thick plywood and the sandpaper is the same width. I glue the sandpaper to the wood with Testors wood cement. I use a ruler, or other straight edge, and a pencil to mark the location.
