My preference is to paint the inside...leaves a clear gloss look on the outside.

Was the paint "flat"? that will give you a slightly rough surface. If it was not a flat paint and you were airbrushing the paint was partially drying before it reached the surface. If that was the case try a little retarder added to the paint.

Insignia, panel lines, and a canopy....any problems with the paint will be unnoticed.
