Johan, I have crushed several of the ribs on the wings of my Piper. And when attached to the fuselage, I'm always hitting the wingtips into the walls. We don't have reindeer here (only on Christmas), but I also have poropeukalo. From what I've seen, you are doing a very nice job on the Scout.

The balsa on the prevoiusly tried laser cut kit was strong enough to take some stress. I forced some bends in the stringers at the nose enlargement. Wetting the stringers first and pre-bending them by hand. When the wood felt more flexible, then I glued it with balsa glue before it dried. On this, non laser cut kit, the wood was much weaker at some parts, so I cracked the stringers at the sharper bends.

I sanded out all markings on the wood. This kit has none of the burn marks that the later one had.

The fuselage. the headrest part is taken from the laser cut kit.

The upper wing is almost done. Fuselage and lower wing not sanded yet.

My workboard is now a leftover plank of oak shelf.

Increasing the font size in Firefox is easily done by pressing Ctrl and +, now I can see what I type.

Starting on the lower wing.

The balsa is cut quite non-accurately. The laser cut kit is much better. The soft balsa is partially crushed in small and tight corners. This is more challenging and much fun. A more thorough builder would probably make the balsa parts from quality stock sheets and not use the supplied wood.

Building again. I love this part, when you assemble the wood frames.

Got a bit carried away in the shop and bought something else also. The Aeronca champion could be my next project.

Sorry, I ment to write plastic. I am using Firefox and the font size in the "upload picture" page is microscopic.

It is a bit hard to see in this picture, but the palstic parts have much more white pigment compared to the more transparent platsic parts in the newer kit.

The kit in the lower box is not laser cut, and had been lying in the hobby store for several years. It costed about 10 € less then the laser cut version I had bought last spring. Some of the balsa supplied in the older version is dry and brittle. Also the silk is green, not white as in the newer laser cut one. Still, I just had to give the older version a try.

Building airplanes is great fun, so no need to get sad if the first try is not going well.

The hobby store had the older version of Thomas Morse Scout on discount.

The hardware store in Espoo, Finland, did not have "clear Dope" on their shelves. I tried solvent based laquer and also water soluble laquer when covering with silk span. It was a mistake. These pics were taken in the spring 2008. The Tommy was ridden by bad luck. I also had a mishap (do you spell it like this?) when trying to attach the wings. I got the fuselage and the lower wing smashed. Maybe I had a stroke of "poropeukalo" - reindeer thumbs, like the Finns say.

Covering the lower wing. I read the instructions, but obviously didnt read them correctly. Got a lot of wrinkles on this.

Yes, my workboard was just a stump of twobyfour at this point.
