I have just returned from the snow cave where I placed Gumby. Gumby is missing. Pictured here is the prime suspect in the Gumbynapping. He is a Rhodesian Ridgeback who uses the name "Bubz". I think a yellow alert is appropriate;-) Bubz strongly dislikes the Gumster

In the off season Gumby builds houses. This condominium awaits spring ownership!

There is a critical part of a biplane construction endeavor. That being the fitting of the wings to each other and to the fuselage. The past few days I have addressing this stage of Ogre construction in an hermit like manner.

Locked in my small basement “man cave” located next to the furnace, I have been installing internal pulleys for the aileron cables, covering the wings with poly-span, and finishing aileron construction.

I buried Gumby in a snow drift while I pondered and implemented this critical part of the build. No room for the myth and hijinks associated with his presence, as an error in thought at this critical juncture, could spell disaster for Ogre’s completion and final form.

The moment of truth eventually arrived....that being the dry fitting of the air foils! I was happy to see that all seems well.

When components fall into place and align with each other in a dry elastically bound fit, you can be fairly certain that all will go well when the wings are placed in bonds of the epoxy molecules in the near future.

Pulleys take one...faux pulleys.

This past Friday around 11 AM I retuned from my annual physical. I was the recipient of the “you will live out the day” guarantee. Rather than faux pulleys, the design team has decided to remanufacture and make functional pulleys. After I retuning from the doctor, we knocked out 8 pulleys. After my thrilling physical exam, it felt a bit different sitting on the model shop stool, but the feeling will pass with time. I remembered that in the scrap box there were many wood discs from previous builds. Gumby made the pulleys and I installed Al tube bearings, wooden sheaves, some roof flashing for a bracket, and a functioning aileron cable control pulley set emerged. While not strong enough for a flight model, they will serve my purpose in showing how things worked in WW1 aero planes.

Thinking about our growing pulley collection I remembered that we had not tapped a great model component resource, that being the son’s Lego part collection. Having just had his 27th B’day, I do not think Toley will miss a few Lego parts. Stripping the tyres off of some small auto rims, ready made pulleys emerged.
