Wind and rain turned most everyone into armchair pilots. Propane heaters, coffee, and a big pot of chili helped keep everyone warm.

Turn out for the club's 2009 Polar Bear Fly In was surprisingly good this year.

I finally found time and suitable weather to dist off my transmitter and planes. Of course the 0-1 MPH wind that was forecasted was more like 5+ MPH with gusts. The sun is far enough to the South now to allow landing from the East in the morning.

I landed and came to a stop where the crossing had been attempted. I hoped to get a picture of them walking past the plane, but she would have nothing to do with it and blew at it (sounds like a sneeze) several times to voice her distrust and alarm.

I have heard of full sized aircraft hitting deer on the runway, but this morning was my first encounter nearly hitting one with a model airplane on a runway only 100' long!

Sadly, the D-7 was not flown. I hear it was for sale but I'd hate to buy it when I could build a kit or from plans. I did get the Aero-Star up a few times and it handled the winds much better than the Tyro did yesterday morning.

Today was the club warbird rally but attendance was a little low due to double booking with a booth for an annual event put on by the city. Fortunately a few sould braved the strong winds and went aloft.

Coming in for a landing. It glides a whole lot flatter than the Tyro and needs more roll out on the runway to come to a stop. I found myself crossing one end of the runway 10' off the ground with the motor off and leaving the far end still 10' up.

She handles the wind a little better than the Tyro but not by much. Only a few clicks of trim and level and straight flight is easily attained.

About 10-15' of roll down the runway and she's off! Power is very mild, about where the Tyro started out which is correct as here I have about 55 W/lb.

Taxi trials, despite my efforts to increase prop clearance, the 14" prop can be heard hitting the mat in bumpy areas. AUW is 6.25 or 6.9 lbs depending on the batteries I was using, with about 400 watts max power.
