My worry would have been the driveshaft I was straddling. Even if enclosed, what if the connecting joint broke like a u-joint does and the shaft flails around. |

Pilots seemed to be most worried about the engine breaking loose in a crash, crushing the pilot. Although I never read anything like that happening. The engine was supposed to be supercharged, but that never happened so the P-39 never achieved its full potential. But Chuck Yeager, in his autobiography wrote about how much he enjoyed flying the plane. He thought it was really responsive and he liked the cannon nose. |
