SteveM | 26-Jan-10 20:09 | The Hellcat is getting a little portly. Recovering the fuselage in silkspan and two layers of thinned nitrate dope on everything added about 0.2 oz., the tailfeather push rods add another 0.2 oz. or so. The only thing missing from this picture is paint. This is the first plane that I have treated with nitrate dope. In fact, it was a mix of 50% nitrate dope, 25% thinner, and 25% retarder. |
pfinn | 26-Jan-10 20:15 | Beautiful workmanship. May I ask which propeller that is? Retarder? Is that the "Banana oil" I hear about? If not, what the heck is, or where do you get, "B.O." ;o) |
SteveM | 26-Jan-10 20:22 | GWS prop, EP-9070X3, available just about anywhere including bphobbies.com. The retarder is made by SIG and helps the dope to flow better and dry more slowly. I want to say it also helps prevent shrinkage over time, but I could be remembering that wrong and the nitrate dope shrinks less anyways. |
pfinn | 26-Jan-10 20:42 | Thanks Steve. Phil |
jgood | 27-Jan-10 04:41 | Looking great, Steve. 8.1oz does not sound bad at all to me. Maybe move to pull-pull linkages for the elevator and rudder, that'd save a bit of weight. How about removing that plastic casing on that receiver too? |
