The sleek shape of the "Frank" is finally taking shape. The Hayate (Hurricane) in the hands of an experienced pilot could out fly both the Musttang and Hellcat.

Looking very good Jerry.

Looks great Jerry. Have you decided on a color scheme? I have found that the scale dihedral that Dave's kits are designed for usually leaves a bit to be desired - at least for FF rubber power. I'm new here, and i'm just learnig the 'ropes' - are you building for elec power? Any dihedral issues with any of your Diels kits? john

I'm looking at color schemes right now, problem is decals. I'm new here too, I've only built a few kits and this is only my second Diels kit. Jerry

What kind of problems with decals do you mean?
jerry campbell16-Jun-07 10:38
I just have not been able to find useful decals for the color schemes I would like to do, and of course kits are not made for the decals I've been able to ob

tain. For 40 years I did plastic models, in fact I use to own a hobby company specializing in plastic models. When I sold it and retired I decided to build stick and paper which I started on as a kid. I'm just surprised at how little after market is available to work with, especially after market decals. I'm really enjoying building. Looking the models and technique of others on this site my technique is improving rapidly, but the lack of markings frustrates me in not being able to finish a kit as I want to. I'm almost 70 and I have no intention of going to commercial art school. It's a hobby, among my other activities, although I do spend a huge amount of time doing it.

You can order any decal sheet Guillows makes for about a buck, plus postage, and they usually include two. They make two kits with Japanese decals, the Rufe and the Zero, and I would think the Zero is close to the kits you're building in size. I also have several decal sheets from various plastic kits I've bought, in search of a good nose wheel, which are not at all realistic to a particular model but which do add lots of interest. It's nearly impossible to find after market decals for anything larger than 1/48 or 1/32 scale so one has to improvise and adapt what is available. Most airplanes, especially warbirds, allow a lot of latitude relative to the paint they wear, as long as the national insignia is visible.

I'm sure that with all the talent available on this site someone will be able to help you with exactly what you want. Just give us an idea of what you have in mind and let's see if we can "fix you up" or at least point you in the right direction. I'm a dumb ass on computers but I know they can be used to make your own decals.

DD is right. They have decal kits that come with paper and a spray bonder to print on an ink jet. One idea that is possible is to buy smaller scale decals, scan into computer and then scale them up to desired size. Of course it requires the computer equipment and a little PC savvy. I have the kit and may try in near future. I agree with your dilema though. There is tons of after market stuff for smaller scale plastic models.
