Image Comments hjlittman 29-Apr-18 13:39 This is one of my Bostillation prototypes that I modified into an autogyro by adding a rotor mast in place of the wing. I did this for the Don Martin Cup contest for rubber powered rotary wing models and ornithopters on April 27. It does fly but on one flight it flew half way across the gym, pitched up, stalled (Yes,model autogyros can stall.) and fell to the floor on its back without breaking the rotor. Then, since the flight started with 2500 turns on the motor, it swept around the gym floor for nearly a minute like a berserk, propeller driven floor polisher. Worse still, Dave Gee videoed the flight! Despite the embarrassment, if I get a copy of it I will post it. Super. hjlittman 30-Apr-18 14:22 The disk under the rotor head is a pulley for a spin up lanyard used for ROG takeoffs. The first time I used it I was surprised by the coordination required to hold the prop and the model on the floor with one hand, pull the lanyard with the other hand, and release the model before the rotor lost speed. At my age, amazingly, I still can get down on the floor and do this! However, the next one I build will have the pulley on top of the rotor head. Please sign in to comment on this image.
