Skyediamonds1985 | 01-May-16 20:04 | Beautiful plane. I can see why it inspired you to replicate it. The red band with the alternating colors on the numbers really makes for eye-popping candy.! |
biplane guy | 02-May-16 14:42 | I couldn't find the original number font the Navy uses for their aircraft markings, at least not a free version. There is one named Long Beach but they want $20.00 to download it. I'm going to scale this photo to 1-5/16" (for the numbers) and then print it on Grafix Clear Adhesive Backed Ink-Jet Plastic Sheets. I then hope to cut out the numbers and letters and stick the sheet to the fuselage as a stencil. I'll let you know if it works. |
biplane guy | 15-May-16 21:33 | Well it seemed like a good idea at the time. The reality is that the film on which the printing is done is fairly thick and isn't able to conform to the irregular surface of the ribs and tissue. This resulted in massive bleeding under the edges. Also, the adhesive is VERY strong. When I removed it from the port side of the fuselage it took the doped finish with it right down to the underlying tissue where it made a small hole in a thankfully small area. It was fixable but disappointing. I printed the registration number for the fin because it was too small to paint on. When I put it in place it smeared and had to be done over, this time sprayed with a clear coat of Krylon before the application to the fin. Next time I'll try making a decal. |
Don C | 16-May-16 10:41 | I used the dry transfers for the numbers on the fin. Works pretty well. |
