The plastic

It's used the same way. The overlaps do not go away but when it's all painted one would hardly know. And besides, some folks go to lots of effort to make panel lines. (joke) You can avoid them if you're a bit more careful than I am. There are two tail cones, the canopy, and a couple of pieces on the bottom made of plastic. All the missiles are made of wood. There is no landing gear.

Just received delivery of SGM weight silkspan from Tower Hobbies. Haven't applied it yet, but it is so much heavier than the Guillows tissue. Are the application techiques the same? Do the overlap marks disappear after doping of during paint layers? Looking real good. How much plastic is in this kit?

Thank you for the info! My next build is going to be the Catalina PBY. Going to try the extra stringers and going to attempt to cover with wet silk span for the first time. I've been studying your photos. Lots of great tips. I appreciate it. TS>

The addition of double stringers is the best idea I have found on any model building website. The final results after filling, shaping and sanding make covering much easier. It is some work, but if you want a stronger frame and more realistic contour to your surfaces, follow David's technique. I'm hooked and would not build a plane any other way.

On this one the stringers just sit on the formers so adding all the extra wood is easy. Generally I'll notch the second set of stringers and add scrap balsa between the formers instead of trying to cut any more notches. You can do it either way, just use filler to make it all smooth where the gaps are.

Question: Not necessarily on this model, but when you add the extra stringers, do you notch the ribs or just cut the stringers to fit in between. Your models come out so good. I'd like to try it on my next project. Thanks!

Just to the top of the green pin is a hole, by the #, and a dowel is inserted all the way through the wing and the fairings to hold it in place. The other wing has a similar ratchet. The sheeting here and on the fairings is per plan but on the fuselage only stringers were called for. I'll glue the wings permanently in about a half way position and not use the dowels.

Nice shots of your TC build. Is all the balsa sheeting standard build? I assume the part on the right is the wing position ratchet. What do they do to move and lock the wing?

It's looking beautiful David. How jealous am I of this aircraft? It reminds me why I fell in love with the F14 as a teenager. It's a gorgeous plane and you're certainly doing it justice here! So much so, I may have just decided what my next build will be (after a BF109 to keep the spit company ;)).
