It is interesting, that in Wikipedia's "Claims to be the first powered flight" article, they discuss Ader, DuTemple, russian Mozhaiski, Whitehead, Pearse, Langley, Jatho, Ellehammer, Wrights, and Santos--Dumont, but for some reason, neglected to even mention Trajan Vuia ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claims_to_the_first_powered_flight

"No. 21" and "No. 22" by Gustave Whitehead 1901-1903 - now recognized as the "first" to fly ...

"VUIA 2" - by Trajan Vuia March 18, 1906 (six months before Santos Dumont) - The Romanians consider Vuia to be the first one who took off using the airplnae's own energy source ( ie, landing gear and motor, and not catapulted down a rail by sandbags falling from a tower and using no landing gear like the Wrights did).

HOLY AVION, BATMAN !! - "AVION III" by Clement Ader 1897

So "Trapper" and I just laid down to watch the show for half an hour. The four bats were erratically flittering and fluttering, and flapping and darting, in a frenzy, and stabbing sideways with their head, to grab the tiny insects - and they were coming in low ... - one foot over my head as we were laying down. Many early planes had wings (even folding wings), LIKE A BAT !! - such as Clement Ader's AVION III 1897, and Trajan Vuia's VUIA II 1907, and Gustave Whitehead's No. 21 & No. 22 (1901-1903)

The most "Hoary Bats" I ever saw at one time was four bats. About a month ago, there was a "hatch" of little sandflies at dusk, on the "downwind" Eastern side of the big Tennis Club building in Jackson Park. I could feel the little specs of insects hitting my face and arms.

Only ever "hit" the runway once - that was with the 22" SIG "Cabinaire"

Went flying in the dark tonight when the Cricket Wicket cleared, at 9:35 pm about 35 minutes after sunset. Got only one good pic out of eight tries. A "Hoary Bat" was chasing the 18" Air Camper
