Oops...did not see my post or your answer so I asked again. Ignore

In an earlier post of this build you had said: "I'm sheeting the top with 1/32" balsa which has been given an application of filler on both sides and then sanded before attaching." As I said it was the first time I had ever seen using filler on both sides.
David Duckett, Comment for image # 1660817 Mar 10 15:19
OK...I found that a coat of filler not only helps seal the wood but also strengthens it. In the only time I tried to sheet anything with 1/32" balsa all the underlying stringers showed as if I had covered it with a thick silkspan. So I put a coat of filler on each side of the 1/32" sheet and sanded it down before gluing it onto the wing. It seems to have worked fairly well as none of the ribs or stringers show. I have used this technique before on smaller pieces by wetting the wood first and curving it and applying the filler when dry.

I'm not sure what you mean about using filler on both sides. No, it's not to the cornfield but rather to someone who might like it.
BillParker, Comment for image # 1614617 Mar 10 09:52
um... shipped north? That's not like "sent to the cornfield" is it?

DD A shame about the lack of desire as this was progressing so well.
Ken Miller, Comment for image # 1614617 Mar 10 09:33
David what is your reason for using filler on both sides? I have looked at probably over 100 builds and thing this is the first time I have seen it done. Thanks
David Duckett, Comment for image # 1614617 Mar 10 08:32
I've lost interest in this one so it's been shipped north.

It's the gopher from Caddyshack.
BillParker, Comment for image # 1660826 Feb 10 14:00
is that a beaver, or an EWOK?
David Duckett, Image # 1660826 Feb 10 13:38

I heard that!

Last night's rain made it too cold to dope so...The design of the ribs allows the bottom of the wing to be one piece of 1/16" balsa.

It required a trip to the LHS, an addition to the mail order but I've finally gotten all the components to "weld" the plastic pieces together. The glue is Bondene and supposed to be equivalent to the others. The LHS adds $1.50 to the catalog price for all these items.

"You betchum, Red Ryder". I had a Little Beaver air rifle when I was a child.

To be continued....

Thank you, David. I was afraid you'd say something like that. For the jug's (partially planked) wings, I sealed the wood and applied the silkspan w/ elmer's, but have been sealing the silkspan w/ nitrate. So far, no problems after two coats, but we'll see...
David Duckett, Comment for image # 1605524 Jan 10 08:46
I did it only once and I didn't like the results. While it all looks fine the dope will further shrink the silkspan when you put it on and that can, and did, cause sections to lift from the frame, especially at junctions and curves which are more like ditches than oranges. I used butyrate for years but I changed to nitrate a couple of years ago and it's now all I use.
Brian Kostecki, Comment for image # 1605524 Jan 10 08:01
Thanks Bill. I've been using nitrate for a while now and have been pretty happy with the results. I seem to recall that David has, at least on occasion, used nitrate as well and I'd guess that if he also doesn't see any problem with elmer's "sandwiched" between coats of nitrate, then I'd proceed confidently with the blessing of two model masters.
