Almost out of the paint shop

although both models are the same size, in reality the Beechcraft is slightly larger and more powerful.

I've added a dorsal fin to the fin/rudder shown on plans.

I learned a long time ago that, for me, the best way to deal with a Guillows cowl is to glue it in place and adjust everything to it. The ones on this and the Beechcraft are both too small at the rear, a design flaw that would have been easy to correct. This cowl was off about 1/16" all around and the right side was 3/32" off. Fortunately, this method does work but it's a slow process and took most of the day to do. As someone once observed on here, Guillows plastic is what it is so I always expect a fight. I usually win but it's from years of getting bloody.

Seeing that your cowls don't fit your fuselages makes me feel better - I thought it was only me. this is going to turn out beautiful, just like the Beechcraft.

There now, all better. You can see just how much of a gap there was.

Filling the gap

I e-mailed Guillows about this and this is the answer, paraphrased. The Cherokee is designed to fly as well as be a scale model and the offset is there by design to help counter the torque of the prop and that this is common. Since I don't build to fly, that sounds plausible except that the offset is not on any of the other cowls in this series so instead of this being common, it is in fact an exception. The right side of this is also shorter than the left. I can't fix the mold but I can the rest although it's a pain in the ass.

We're busy setting rain records and won't break 80F this year till possibly later this week. Around here it's a "wet heat".

I've sanded too much off the top so I'll have to put it back on and then sand it all back into shape. The right side of the cowling is quite a bit off and I want to glue it on before adding the wood.. A note: The windows as shown on the plan are not right but the box art is correct. Also, the rudder in the one Al flew in has a dorsal fin which is not on the plans.

And at 8pm it's still 100*......

This is the replacement! It's just like the one in the kit. Fortunately, Guillows is super about replacing defective parts.
