The only kit wood I've used on the wings or tail was the leading edge of the wing. The theory is for a bit of strength when it undoubtedly plummets to the earth and because its in front of the C of G for a bit of extra nose weight. Sarcasm aside, the whole thing feels pretty light compared to the FW190 at the same point so I'm hopefully going in the right direction.

Yes, I have built the Zero and Mustang for Rubber. I replaced some of the wood and only used every other rib for the wing. I may have even skipped a stringer or two on the wing. The Mustang flew ok and the Zero was too heavy but it did fly. I ended up adding Cox engines to both and they flew great.

Thanks for the comment. The only wood from the kit I'm using are the fuselage formers which is why Im cutting them up a bit. I hope with the rest of the build made from lighter balsa this one will do a bit better than my first build the FW190 which was a bit of an old dog. Hopefully with each build I'll improve. Out of curiosity does anyone ever make a 400 series with rubber power or is this a step too far?

Your build looks great, nice job on the nose block. I just finished mine and posted pictures on this site. Just by replacing the wood and no other changes, mine came out to 19grams. That is still a little heavy, but guaranteed to fly.

Believe it or not, I think the build is much more faster just by simply replacing the wood with quality balsa. My recent Guillow builds I used the patterns and cut out the pieces with not other modifications to make them light. Just by replacing the balsa these birds do fly. Might have to increase the dihedral.

Removing balsa from a Guillows model always helps. These models are so robust that you can actually remove alot more balsa. I suggest cutting the longeron, with the square holes in it, down to half its thickness or less. You can also safely trim down the thick side longeron by half. Basically almost all the model wood can be trimmed to half thickness.

Another new thing this site has helped on. Nose blocks? Here is my first attempt at such a thing that was loosely based on something I saw on this site.

Will this weight reduction help?

You can see the weight reduction on all the formers behind the C of G

This is my second build after an FW190. I built the first kit with all the included parts and then found it was very heavy and didnt fly too good. This website has helped me no end and so on this build I have purchased lighter balsa and although I am using kit wood for the formers I am lightening them. The keel has also been thinned as shown.
