This was covered with the light weight Silkspan that came with the kit, a little yellowed but cleared up after brushing on 2 coats of thinned dope. I am using the last of my Aerogloss dope for this project, my favorite dope that is no longer being made. I was hoping some other company would have bought the Aerogloss line, but that never happened. I have enough colored Aerogloss dope but not enough thinner, I have heard that Sig thinner works with Aerogloss so I will have to weight and see. I really like the look of doped silkspan and was thinking about leaving it white, but it is a Cub so I think tomorrow I am going to airbrush the Aerogloss Cub yellow on. I have always liked silkpsan, super easy to use and strong and really does not add much weight. I know a lot of modeler who used to use it for small freeflight models with complex curved structures since this stuff goes on great when wet. I don't think K&S makes silkspan any longer, but Sig and Guillows still sells the lite stuff. I also know people who use it on the nose blocks since regular tissue can be tricky. When I first started building, I really struggled with applying Guillows and comet tissue to my builds, remember we did not have YouTube or internet back in the day to learn from. My first good covering job came from a Sterling kit with Silkspan, I covered it just like the plans stated except I used Elmers glue to attach the silkspan, for me back then it came out nice. Of course I ended up screwing it up by trying to paint the plane with colored dope and a Testors paint brush. Covering with wet light weight silkspan is how I learned how to cover with wet Esaki and Domestic tissue, of course there was a larger learning curve with the tissues. I apply the silkspan the same today as I did back in the day, brushing on thinned Elmers glue, wetting the tissue with a water bottle then stretching the covering on. If the silkspan lifts, I re wet the area of silkspan and reapply nice and tight. I have never tried applying dried silkspan, but I am sure it would work fine. The covering and 2 coats of thinned dope added 6 grams to my previous weights. Hopefully I will get around the airbrushing tomorrow and finishing in the next week. |
