Ah, I have one of those motor/gearboxes too. They're good. Same weight almost as the IPS, but much more power. Should be good!

Thanks James. It's a brushless Feigao of some kind in some sort of gearbox. Funny what you forget about a plane that has been on the building board for two years. When I get home tonight I'll have to track down the specifics of the motor and try to get a better idea what sort of weight I am up to once it is all covered.

Looks great Steve. Is that an IPS in there? If so, you should be able to have around an 8-9oz AUW, which will make it nice and slow and easy to land. I used to love doing touch and go's with my Hellcat. I hope to build a new one soon, maybe I'll try tissue for covering. I wonder how the covering weight compares with Solite?

Covering the wing with silkspan (dry with an UHU glue stick) was refreshingly easy and went smoothly. About all that is left is to redo the control surfaces then fortify the fuselage as John C. suggested.

Hmm, that's a good idea. I'll also try to find a relatively simple color scheme just in case I need to do a lot of patching.

Thanks! Now to get on to the rest of the wing.

I suggest leaving the domestic tissue on and adding some silkspan where it is more likely to be torn, like the bottom and the very front. You can even apply the silkspan over the tissue.

Looking good SteveM

I really must spend more time proof reading my comments.

Less than an hour of work to replace the Doculam with silkspan while listening to Norm build a drop leaf table. The area you see covered hear is all the further I had got with Doculam and it was painful progress at best.

"Land gently" being the problem with me, that and hanger rash. It will be a fairly light plane, but I still have a knack for breaking off motors. For now I'll proceed to cover everything else with silkspan. After all, the wings probably could use the tougher skin more than the fuselage.

It looks fine to me also.

It looks fine. Leave it on and land gently, away from tall grass.

Sorry for the delay, I missed seeing your comment till now. As you'll see in the next photo I have decided to switch to silkspan so I'll be cleaning the Doculam off these parts soon. I'd leave it on there but I'm afraid that the textural differences would show through the paint.

After spending close to an hour struggling to cover a few square inches of the wing with Doculam (the stuff I used on the Tyro) I got demotivated and gave up as I have done on many previous occasions. Then I decided that having it covered in silkspan was better than not having it covered in Doculam so I got busy. As I was preparing to cover the last two spots of the fuselage it suddenly dawned on me that I was not using my medium grade silkspan, but had somehow grabbed a spare sheet of domestic tissue and was too dense to notice the difference for a few hours. What do you guys think, leave the tissue on or strip it off and redo with silkspan?

any updates on this?

I guess you'll have to take my word for it, but the last of the tailfeathers are now covered. All that remains are the wing and fuse.

Well, in that case, forget the Doculam, it sound like it would be more trouble than it's worth. Thanks, anyway. Any ideas on how I can mount the other wing accurately.
SteveM, Comment for image # 807929 Apr 08 12:36
It's about like trying to paint the plastic parts our models, kind slimes around so you need to apply a very thin base coat and let it get good and dry. Paint adhesion is not the best and certainly not suitable for a static display model. When patching the Tyro I treated it with vinegar so we'll see if that helps improve adhesion. I will happily toss in some Doculam for you, but I suggest using it only on flying planes with simple paint schemes. The ailerons may look smooth now, but paint will reveal some small wrinkles near the corners.

Steve, I can't even see the covering. How does it accept paint? Especially acrylics. If you have that much, send me some with the Zero.
