I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

In 2002 I was comissioned to build this second B-17 for an exhibit at the Reagan Library about World War II and this is painted as the Memphis Belle. Looking at it now, it's not my best effort and although I tucked these photos in a build somewhre, I hope you don't mind me adding them into their proper places. The planes are still there in the office of the historian.

Orders for 700 aircraft were placed, but only 66 were delivered before Japan's surrender. One squadron, VF-66, was equipped with the aircraft before war's end, but they never saw combat. On 6 November 1945, the Fireball was the first aircraft to land under jet power on the escort carrier USS Wake Island, albeit unintentionally. After the radial engine of an FR-1 failed on final approach, the pilot managed to start the jet engine and land, barely catching the last arrestor wire before hitting the ship's crash barrier. US Navy pilots considered Fireball to be a uniquely poorly chosen name, given its "fiery accident" connotations. The aircraft were withdrawn in 1947, fairly soon after the war's end. With the rapid advance in technology, and the removal of the pressing need to get anything into combat quickly, the Navy decided to wait for better aircraft to be developed.

Looking for a hobby 1 1/2 years past, I stumbled onto VA. Saw one of your builds....your Spirit, if I recall correctly. Look what you have turned me into!!! THANKS!

Thank you. I'm honored to believe that my efforts will inspire others in this hobby. That makes it all worth it. And about them being perfect, of course they're not. I do believe in making each one as well as I can and I just don't photograph the mistakes. You should also remember that I've built at least 80 of these over the years and in the case of this particular model, this is the third time I've built it. Thanks again for the kind words and if I may be permitted to paraphrase a song, "Anything I can do, you can do better".

David... inspite of my age and life-long association with airplanes and aviation, I must say your talent is an inspiration indeed. My hangar shows 11 Guillows hanging as of Feb. '09... all of just average talent. I'm just beginning a Mitchell B 25 and am proceeding with, "If David can do it to perfection, so can I."... but I know I can't. But, your inspiration prompts me to try. I'll post along the way. Thanks for the inspiration, and the tips...

But David, don't you have all of those lights in the sky every now and then? At least six and we gave you anotheer three or four a week or so ago. Enjoy it David, you have the best of both worlds.

If somehow you can capture your Shuttle flying past this moon as a backdrop. OMG... I think I just soiled myself.

It was a special event for me to see the 17 coming in at home town airport. The sounds of the 4 engines cutting back on power and the pop, pop of an engine backfiring as it touched down like a eagle.

David, that's the most beautiful P-38 I've ever seen!

Here are some examples of David's work that got displayed at a museum (of sorts).

Abby, once I finish my Piper, I'll be working on a Guillows Mustang. A couple of thoughts for sheeting come to mind. You can do what David and others do by adding stringers or filling in between the stringers with balsa, or sheet with 1/32 birch and then add the aluminum. What I have done in the past is to build the model and then fill it with spray foam insulation. Looks ugly at first, but once it it trimmed and sanded down to the original structure, you have a very sturdy framework to glue the aluminum. I've used contact cement previously. The cool thing about this method is the panels can be cut to size just like the full size panels. Voila, instant panel lines.
