I think I have seen these on the net but the scale has been too small for anything that I have built. Williams Bros. has a 1/8 scale radial that could be used in the Rat, but the Rat engine is not visible and the engine is over $50. I assume that you are using one of these in your DC-3

Well I went ahead an ordered two R1830s from these guys. What the heck its only money. W is sending us all $300 bucks so why not? Anyway I had to see them up close & they will be great for the DC3. You guys need to check em out , Go to www.Neomega-resin.com The 1/72 and 1/48 scale stuff won`t do us much good, but the 1/32 will work the DC3 B25 and other stuff . Let me know what you think. from Russia with love.

That is a real work of art. I think I see some oil leaking from one of the cylinders.:-)

The screws are steel allen set screws !/4 20 3/8 long,I got from Lowes. Hard to tell I know because everything has a coat of gray primer on it. I have used threaded plastic rod in the past . It is cheap and works good and is easy to cut. Used plastic rod on my Spirit of ST. Louis. These little allens were the right size, so I used them this time. The rocker boxes are balsa, you don`t see them much once the engine is in the cowling.I found 1:32 scale plastic Wright R1830 engines on the inter-net that look really cool, but at 30 bucks each It`s too much for the old pocket book

Are those plastic screws?

That is a very nice looking paint scheme, I can't wait until you start building the model!

Doing some ground work on the DC3. Checking size of Ozark layout for fit.

1/32sq. is used top and bottom to simulate ribs. The whole unit is then covered with jap. tissue and clear dope is applied. You can separate the elevator and stabilizer later if you want moveable surfaces. But, I find it is easier to cover as one unit. Hope the drawing is of some help. Those two spots flying in close formation at about 8 o'lock on the drawing are not UFO's. They are actually bacon grease as I drew this at the kitchen table.

Thanks, Great info. I'm acheiveing similar results with a different method. I like your method better. Great explaination and diagram. Thanks
OLD A&P, Image # 630502 Feb 08 12:52

Barnstormer, I fabricate the tail surfaces by laminating three pieces of 1/32" balsa. The center piece has profile of both the elevator and stabilizer. Two pieces of the sme size as the stabilizer are added to make the stabilizer 3/32". On the elevato

Plastic cowl was covered with alum. tape cut to size from a pattern. A Dremel using a little brush attatchment with a piece of blue Scotchbrite sheet attatched with masking tape was then pressed on the to make the engine swirls

How did you achieve the burnished look?
