I have very limited experience with scratch-building, the WACO UPF-7 was my first attempt. I had the plans I found online scaled to the dimensions I needed and printed on velum which is semi-transparent and made positioning the plans over the balsa or basswood sheets easier. I could then insert some graphite paper between the plans and wood and then trace the part with a small embossing tool (tip about the size of a ballpoint pen). The tool didn't tear or ink over the plans and left clean lines on the wood.

I agree! Love to scratch build, but it is more work. I like to print the plans out on 8.5x11 label sheets and attach those directly to the balsa. Some people like to glue the drawing to the balsa. Whatever works. Also, I'd think about adding more formers. Going from 13" to something larger means larger gaps to fill. Just a thought.

I think you'll enjoy a scratch build. More work than a kit, but more rewarding to me. I'll suggest that you make a couple more copies of the plans and going online and finding pictures and 3 way drawings of it if possible. That will help in case the plans are not quite scale.

I found this from Outerzone. Originally 13" wingspan, blown up to 1/16th scale to match the Precious Metal. Any tips, tricks, advice before starting on this endovor? I have a Diels Bearcat i thought about converting, but 100% sctrach would be cool too. Especially after seeing the canopy forming - i think i want to give it a shot.

I have MFS, but I dont play much. Every time I try to get in to it, seems there is another 80 gig download... : ) I still am in shock and awe of it - I started with FS 95. The Reno expansion is incredible, I didn't know it was in the works. Maybe someday someone will make an add-on for the PM 51. There are a LOT of other famous race planes - Strega, Rare Bear, etc.. i could see all of these making there way - fingers crossed anyway.

Hi everyone and thank you for the comments. I forgot to mention the carrier film on the decals completely disappears too with a coat of Future floor polish. The ElDorado and Precious Metal for example are one piece massive decals. No way i'm trimming around all of that... biplane guy, it's just plain HVAC foil tape from the hardware store.

What did you use for the metal finish? That really came out well. Tanks for the tip on DrawDecal.com.

That's nice. I like the way the foil turns out.

I like how this turned out. I may think about the decal idea. I generally create my own with inkjet waterslide paper, but it's a bit of work. Looks like you got great results from the on-line source.

Decals from ' DrawDecal.com '. They custom printed them, very different decal material. Water for 5 seconds and they slide off in 30. No setting solution required and they just sink right into every detail. Very impressed with them.

Ed, i did watch that video - very cool and thanks! i'll be priming with gloss black after 800-1000 grit paper.

no problem, i didn't know it existed either. Could've come in handy on so many other models from times past... you have to put it on kind of thick and you'll see scribe marks from the pen, but it you blow on it, it'll even out and shine right up, self leveling. it's a matter of seconds though, so need to move quick as you can. I'll try the paint someday, it may apply easier.

Thanks for sharing. I never knew that stuff existed.
