I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

An art form in it's own class. Instructions?

Bird Dog cowl, rubber mold, and a newly molded duplicate.

I'm using the F-15 canopy as practice for developing a duplication method for discontinued kits like the Mosquito, Airacobra, and B-29. If I can avoid using the plastics then someone else can build/buy it when I am done.

Why are you making a new canopy, Steve?
SteveM, Image # 587020 Jan 08 18:49

An attempt to plunge mold the canopy, I think maybe a vacuum former will be needed.

Using wet silkspan allows for large areas with compound curves to be covered with one piece.

I tried a few searches and have found that plastic modelers use it on their clear parts, but I had trouble finding any references to stick and tissue planes. I have previously used dope and dope thinner for sealing wood and adhering tissue. This is my first try with white glue, but it is nearly odorless and very inexpensive so I will try to use it as much as I can if it works well on this plane.

Have you ever used Future Floor wax as a sanding sealer and protectant? I use it also to put the tissue on with and it works great.

Nose covered wet using a 70/30 white glue/water mix (glue mix on the wood and water on the silkspan). Progress has slowed now that school is back in session.

Plastic tail cone was a little loose so I made the body with wood and only used the very end part.

Plastics added and blended in with filler. Everything is "sealed" with a 70/30 glue/water mix.

The rain forest of Oregon. This is what happens when it rains at 34F, once it warmed up to 36F it turned into our typical winter rain. Quite unlike your climate in AZ.

Where are you and what's that white stuff?
SteveM, Image # 564706 Jan 08 12:24

Perfect building weather, too bad I need to run errands. The forecast is for rain all day.

It is looking great!! I have always wondered what one of these would look like and the F-15 is not part of my jet collection so seeing it done so well is especially welcome.

Second coat of filler has been sanded. Some problem areas still exist but it is already showing promise.
SteveM, Comment for image # 557604 Jan 08 13:57
Thanks for the information. The whole bird has a second coat of filler that was dried overnight, I will post a picture after having sanded it. One issue I had after the first coat is that stringers that were too close to allow filler to get between them tended to remain loose and would flex away from the sand paper. Maybe some dope sealer prior to the first coat would have helped stick them together. I don't think I saw any of the balsa sagging (I didn't do any sealing).
poppy, Comment for image # 557604 Jan 08 06:59
My process for balsa coverings: After sealing balsa with 2 coats of dope(important to keep wood from sagging) and a light sand, I use 4-5 coats of Micro-Fill diluted a bit w/water sanding, after dry, lightly btween each. I apply 2 coats of white sanding sealer, again sanding lightly between coats. I then use a thin coat of micro-fill, diluted a bit w/water, and sand again. I use the fill again to correct any flaws, sand, and apply another coat of white sanding sealer. 320 grit sand paper is what I use. I continue this last process until I am satisfied w/finish.

It's looking really good. I've learned that two or more applications of this stuff is better than one with lighter sanding each time.
