I finally found time and suitable weather to dist off my transmitter and planes. Of course the 0-1 MPH wind that was forecasted was more like 5+ MPH with gusts. The sun is far enough to the South now to allow landing from the East in the morning.

Great pic!

Amazing photos. It just goes to show that chicks did pilots.

I was doing touch and goes in the Aero-Star (after stalling and knocking the wing off the Tyro) when the lead doe attempted to cross the upwind end of the runway. I was standing on the downwind end so as to best view my approaches and they came up from behind so neither of us was away of what the other was doing. I made a lovely touch near the middle up the runway and powered back up when I saw a ball of brown fur darting off of the runway. I landed and turned around and there they were standing in a line so I took some photos.

I landed and came to a stop where the crossing had been attempted. I hoped to get a picture of them walking past the plane, but she would have nothing to do with it and blew at it (sounds like a sneeze) several times to voice her distrust and alarm.

I have heard of full sized aircraft hitting deer on the runway, but this morning was my first encounter nearly hitting one with a model airplane on a runway only 100' long!

She looks beautiful in the air! A shame to have had her on the shelf for so long. Great job!!

The wind conditions this morning were about as good as they get, a gentle breeze from time to time that was generally lengthwise to the runway. The Poppy-DD Aero-Star had only been flown on fairly windy days prior to this so I was in for a pleasant surprise when I was able to really grease in some touch and goes. The Tyro did well too today. When I bring a camera nothing is worthy of a photo. But since I did not take my camera today I can't show the spike and two does that I had to wait on to vacate my parking spot, or the giant 50cc gasoline plane one fella just started flying.

I'm not sure, he didn't say and no one asked. But I imagine one could buy a kit or ARF of it just as easily.

Steve... What does a plane like this sell for?
SteveM, Image # 894319 Jul 08 23:45

Sadly, the D-7 was not flown. I hear it was for sale but I'd hate to buy it when I could build a kit or from plans. I did get the Aero-Star up a few times and it handled the winds much better than the Tyro did yesterday morning.

Today was the club warbird rally but attendance was a little low due to double booking with a booth for an annual event put on by the city. Fortunately a few sould braved the strong winds and went aloft.

This morning I tested out the new battery (9S1P A123 LiFe) and prop (13x8) combination and got about 600 watts. This is the maximum voltage this motor can handle, the smaller prop has better ground clearance, and at about 90 Watts/lb it has adequate power now. Compared to the Tyro it maneuvers like a freight train, but I am slowly backing off on my "low rate" settings to increase the throw.

A flight nearly 19 years in the making - thanks to you and DD I was able to get it up there. Some various trim and decals are yet to be installed as they would have just got in the way while working out all the kinks.

Yeah, baby, GO!!

Looks great Steve. Congrats on the flights! I like the undercarriage, very unique.

Coming in for a landing. It glides a whole lot flatter than the Tyro and needs more roll out on the runway to come to a stop. I found myself crossing one end of the runway 10' off the ground with the motor off and leaving the far end still 10' up.
SteveM, Image # 876723 Jun 08 16:02

She handles the wind a little better than the Tyro but not by much. Only a few clicks of trim and level and straight flight is easily attained.
SteveM, Image # 876623 Jun 08 16:01

About 10-15' of roll down the runway and she's off! Power is very mild, about where the Tyro started out which is correct as here I have about 55 W/lb.

Taxi trials, despite my efforts to increase prop clearance, the 14" prop can be heard hitting the mat in bumpy areas. AUW is 6.25 or 6.9 lbs depending on the batteries I was using, with about 400 watts max power.
