Thanks...Jack Draw directed me to a site with colorful Spads from the "Hat in the Ring Squadron". I have picked one out and will probably spend two weeks trying to duplicate the paint. I hope the process will be theraputic. I need to find a lot of stars!!!

John, the Squadron book SPAD Fighters in Action has a nice profile and top wing in color for the Hat in the Ring SPAD. It should be available at most hobby shops or through Amazon. Apparently they were painted up after the war, when camo wasn't so critical. The weight of the paint adversely affected the plane's flying ability.

Not to take anything from John, but if you haven't seen Jack's SPAD, go take a look. He is exceedingly modest in what his plane looks like. And it flies! The flight photos are absolutely inspiring.

Outstanding work John, looks excellent.

I wound up scratch building the cowl. The radiator louvers and radiator are also not furnished with the kit.

One more section to cover on the belly of the fuse. Methinks I will also add the landing gear.

Well we have a compled nose and cowl.

The master plan. Totally finish the fuse. MGs, LG, and paint. Then build the wings.

I hope to have the cowl and nose finished tomorrow.

I think I found the handle for the cowl. I got most of it roughed out this PM.

Jack, comments are interpreted as html. The down side is that white space and newline characters are ignored, the up side is that if you know some basic html you can control the content of your comments far better than with simple text, including adding links like I just did.

Jack....Thanks I am very pleased with the grill and radiator. Looking for a spad painted similar to the Dumas kit. Like a flying American flag. If you know of a picture local please send it via e-mail...johnmoshust@att.net This way I can get you email address.

Jack....these rings...installed. If you can point me to a site with paint schemes for Spad XIII plese do so johnmoshust.att.net
John M Oshust, Image # 944604 Oct 08 10:49

Jack....Problem solved. I made a plate, fabircated radiator louvers, and installed a screen. The rings will glue on to this plate.

If i recall well, the cowl is made of three (thick) rings of balsa, one smaller one in balsa and on top one or two rings in ply (I didn't use them, because they got broken. I replaced it with an balsa ring and then coated the whole thing in thinned epoxy). Once the rings are glued it's time for a lot of sanding and shaping. :-)

Not much here today. I was helping a friend drop 3 large maple trees. I did get the elevator sheeted and studied the cowl.

Jack I still cannot figure the cowl sequence. Maybe I misplaced a ring. Do not go away. Post pictures of your Spad.

a true word... I admire al the work and dedication I see here and your builds are awesome... (the rat and the tri-motor are just mind-blowing and not only because you hardly see them being build!) So the moment I saw this thread I was very excited. I will return to the background, watch and steal with my eyes ! ;-)
