Test fit of the pieces

I got a bit sidetracked with an art project. Laser cut acrylic pieces. Any guesses as to what it is?

Tires were primed, spray painted with olive drab enamel and the tires are black acrylic. Still needs a coat of flat.

I was able to make eight useable tires with the new resin/injecting system. After the third good tire, the mold tore, but I was able to tape it shut and kept casting.

I found some new resin and, using PFinn and Frwyflyer's suggestions with injecting, rather than pouring the resin, I used this squeeze bottle. Worked well. The tip of the squeeze bottle is on the table. What looks like the tip on the bottle is actually dried resin. It doesn't stick to the bottle so I was able to remove it and reuse the bottle.

Thanks Phil, thanks Ted. I will try the syringe method.

Frwy's right, James. To make the mold, you need to make a box to contain the liquid latex. I set the tire in the center, above the arrow, locked it in place with clay, built up the walls with more Legos and then poured one half of the mold. Then you tear down the walls (Mr. Gorbochev), remove the clay, turn the mold over, rebuild the walls and pour the second half. The Alumilite website has much better tutorials than I just explained. Now that Ted mentioned it, this thing does look rather like a Mondrian painting.

I think he is building a dam to contain the mold material. It looks like a "cubist period" painting that I saw in an Art History class

It looks like your getting close. It always takes a little bit to zero in.

Me no understand!

Try putting the resin in the refrigerator. Might buy you that little bit of time you need. You may want to disguise it though! Try using a syringe to inject the resin. The LHC have thore "Mono-ject" or similar ones that you can cut some of the tip off. You can re-use them. Leave about 1/8" of resin in the syringe after you've shot your mold, let it go off and harden. It nearly always comes out with the plunger. Peel it off the plunger. Or blow it out with compressed air. Be careful were you're aiming!

Talking with FrwyFlyer, he suggested changing the mix. The middle one is about 1 part resin and 1/2 catalyst. Better, but the detail of the hub is too soft. For the last one, the mix was just right (this is starting to sound like Goldilocks). Except I didn't have enough. For the last one, I also poured directly into the hub detail, and then closed up the mold and finished the pour. The detail is better, now I just need to watch my amounts. These remind me of those monster movies where the creature is interrupted in mid-transformation. (Start the Theremin music now).

First attempts, from left to right. The left one was mixed 1/1 per instructions and was too hot. It set up really quick. Pretty amazing to see the stuff change color and cure right before your eyes.

First time trying this. I got a really good mold. I used the Alumilite starter kit. About $30, with enough rubber to make one mold, and enough resin to make several small castings.

To mold the tire I used Legos to make a dam.

A plastics mfg. could not have done this better. It's going to be needed at the National Museum Of The Pacific War in Fredericksburg, TX.
