I just received a shipment of the Brodak medium Silkspan last weekend. I was surprised on how heavy it was. The instructions that are included with each package were very helpful. It sure sucks up a lot of dope, but finishes out great on the one piece that I did. Thanks to DD and Sky for the tutorials the last couple of days: Very helpful. Now to translate the knowledge into actual practice.

To my knowledge, there are three types of silkspan. The stuff Guillows uses in their larger kits is lightweight and made for them by a local paper company. The only source of other silkspan is Brodak which offers light and medium. I have used nothing but heavy grade, excepting the Wright, for my models because simply put, it's tough. The stuff we used for years is no longer available but the medium from Brodak is essentially the same as heavy grade and is what I'm using now. Lightweight is flimsy to start with and doesn't improve when wet so it requires somewhat of a lighter touch. Heavier grades retain their strength when wet and can be handled much easier. Of course, it is heavier but weight is of no concern. A drum tight covering is the goal.In this photo the covering is dry and ready to be trimmed and this is when it gets its first full coat of dope. After that's dry it can indeed be sanded, as Sky said, but I choose to wait until after a second coat is on. I use nothing higher than a 400 grade and 320 works just fine. The idea of sanding silkspan might sound like certain disaster but use a very light touch and all will be well. I will normally put on two more coats of dope before painting.

Looks like it has been released. About 73 bucks on the Dumas website.

Two weeks later, there's a new Picture of the Month! Seems a bit odd, the previous photo was up for nearly two months. So much for the "coveted" title. It is good, however, to see photos from other members of this site in the scroll.

Dfell, the Mosquito is still in its box on my shelf, along with the P-39 and others, awaiting the day that I've built the requisite skill and nerve to tackle those (potentially) great-looking models. I've made some modest progress on my P-47, and I'll make it a point to post some pictures soon. Mr. Duckett, I understand your point completely - I love the Guillow's kits, but they do have their flaws, even in the laser-cut versions. I haven't tried a Dumas kit, but I understand they have some distinct weaknesses too, especially in the quality of their plans, and to me, they don't "look" very scale. As Mr. Oshust points out, the AerodromeRC kits look to be of high quality.

The short answer is no. I have built the Spitfire, although not lately, the P-40, and the Mustang (twice). The BF-109 is not a pretty plane to me and several folks have pointed out that the scale on it is not correct. I do like the Zero and FW-190 but I have built a larger 190 and I really don't like the canopy in the Zero kit. I've built the Wright Flyer and the laser cut version of the Fokker Triplane and I just happen to have an old kit of it. The difference is amazing so I would imagine that the new laser cut versions will be the same. It's not only that the parts are correctly cut, something not always found on their die cut parts, but that everything fits as it should because of it.

Brian - How are you doing with the Mosquito? A model Guillow's needs to bring back.
Brian Kostecki, Comment for image # 2161825 Apr 11 08:14
David, do you have any interest in building one of Guillow's new laser-cut 400-series kits? It would be a pleasure to see what you could do with a Spitfire, Bf 109, or a Zero, though I realize you've already built variations of these in the past.

There are many who agree with John, including me.

Absolutely Beautiful, very clean and sharp looking!! I agree with John about Guillows.

I think I'll wait for the Dumas kit.
David Duckett, Comment for image # 2239324 Apr 11 21:41
That's for the short kit and plans. Choices, choices.
John M Oshust, Comment for image # 2239324 Apr 11 21:08
36 inch kit $65...plus it is custom cut and you can make requests of the manufacturer.
David Duckett, Comment for image # 2239324 Apr 11 21:05
Quality it may be but $255.00 is just a bit much! This one will be about $50.00.

Why wait purchase this one and experience a quality build laser cut kit.http://www.aerodromerc.com/WWI/Nieuport28_36/Nieuport28_36t.htm

I will be on top of this one. I believe part of the history of this model is that it liked to shed the fabric from the top wing during a steep dive.

I don't plan to build anymore Guillows kits until the two new ones arrive on the market. The current Skyraider and the next will keep me busy for quite awhile.
David Duckett, Comment for image # 2161824 Apr 11 18:39
It doesn't quite work that way. I've sent photos of every Guillows model I've made over the past 5 1/2 years and this is the third one to make it. Many times the selected model is not up to the standards that you and I set for ourselves, IMO, but they seem to be selected to show the wide range of people building their kits and the many variations that are done with them, not necessarily the best made. Then too, it does say "Picture of the month" and not "Model of the Month". I have seen other than a Guillows model in the scroll a couple of times and Mark said he was aware of it but liked the model anyway. Regardless, it's his call. Here in Tucson, as in many other places, juried art competitions are held and usually the jury consists of one person. And while many works will be selected for the show, only one will be judged "Best in Show" and all the other artists will console themselves with the idea that had there been another opinion, they would have won.

And well it should be.
