Thanks dave, this is my second balsa model in 30 years so I'm picking your brain and pictures for ideas,,,Great workmanship on your part,, grats

Not between the plastic nacelle and wing. The fit was fine so it wasn't required. The covering shown here is between the plastic pieces.

Hi Dave, newbi here.Did you cover between the plasic and balsa? Hard to tell from the picture.

Ahem...yes....adults.... Thanks for all your help dave. Kinda having 2nd thoughts for movable surfaces now.

I think a better method would be to double the thickness of the frames and use the plastic, or similar material, as a hinge. The extra thickness will make it much easier and will also make the frames look more realistic as you'll be able to shape them better. You might also consider why you want them to move. I used to build all the surfaces to move, and the wheels retract and all the stuff that was there but these days I don't. I do build the tail feathers as separate pieces but only to show the definition, not to move. All those extra things make a plane look better but how often will the features be used after it's built? Chances are after you get over showing it off and that it can do those things it will find a place and those moving features will not be moving. All the extra love that you put into one of these will certainly show but unless it's flying it truly is static. And one more thing...unless the hinge material is up to being glued in you might break it off playing with it. But of course, adults don't play with their toys so it shouldn't be a problem.

The only reason for cloth hinges is strength. If you don't plan to fly it, don't use them cause without all the support shown here they will flop.

Thanks very much, very helpful, I see what the other modellers say about you is true. P.S Won't that make the elevator/rudder "flappy"?
David Duckett, Image # 343002 Jul 07 01:06

Cloth hinges. The piece of cloth is glued on top of one piece and the bottom of the other.

This link shows something of it.

I use little 'tabs' of floppy disk material for the hinges on my flying models. Take apart an old floppy disk, and cut the hinges out of the disk material. Sand them a little to rough them up, cut slits in the tail plane and elevator, push the hinge in, and then wick a drop of thin CA glue to hold it in there. Very light, and very strong.

For Doodle- use hinges. This is the method Guillows uses and it's common for all their kits. A different method is used if the control surfaces are to be functional, that is for a flying model.

Dave, each of your models looks better than the previous. Beautiful craftsmanship.

I tink I told you this was a "HOT" ship!

Added a more scale like nose wheel, front gear door, and radome (just behind gear). No more guns-finished.

Yes we did actually. In fact, I think we've more than re-paid our debt to the Yanks over the years.

John, David doesn't fly his models. David does conventional painting on canvas, and these are his 3d sculptures...

Tremendous facsimile of a true Allied workhorse. Like the fact it is in British markings.

David, these planes are just absolutely gorgeous. As I'm still trying to learn names, styles and preferences, forgive me for not knowing, but - are these display models or are they flying models? They really are stunning. john

Thank you.
