7am, 45 minutes after sunrise, 34F and calm. Gas planes are not allowed to fly till 9am so I get the field and the view to myself. The new flight box is a lifesaver, two Pb-acid batteries are hidden inside to provide recharging power.

The Tyro is repaired and ready to fly again. Based on the wind forecast very early Friday morning might be a good time to sneak out to the field to try again.

Ready for paint, which is an obvious disadvantage to a painted RC model. This time around I am going to wipe with vinegar then alcohol to see if that improves paint adhesion.

Had to take a break from time to time to let the weather pass. The club persident showed up and had no problem with his 5 lb gas plane. We both agreed that I needed a calm day for a maiden but once at the field you just can't pass up the temptation.

Lucky me, I hit the center of the only patch of blackberrys and bushes in the field and the LE found the biggest small tree in that patch. No serious damage, wing got ripped off and the fuse sides pulled apart just enough to pop loose everything inside.

It's about 100' from the runway to those trees so I immediately had to try to turn but ended up going in a circle as I embarked on my "crash course" of learning to fly. I was about to get pushed into those trees so I decided it was time to bring it down.

I started getting braver and tried to do brief lifts off the runway but the wind would push me and I'd end up crashing into the grass. Finally I decided it was time to try to get some height, it immediately turned downwind as seen here.

Burned up one battery (all of 5 minutes) getting the feel of the plane on the ground. Gusts of wind kept tipping it over onto one wing tip and I'd have to run over and set it back upright.

Last Saturday it hit 84F, almost the hottest in 50 years. And now April snow on the valley floor. Cold and wet is the forecast, but there is also little wind for the next 3 hours so I might try to sneak out to the field.

I installed this screw to keep the motor on the mounting stick about 30 seconds after reading this hilarious post by James.

Testing out the motor and servos. AUW is 14.7 oz as shown here with the 640 mAh battery. Rain and 10 MPH wind is the forcast for the next week, I guess that gives me time to adjust all the servos and practice on the simulator.
