That's good, because as you can see, nobody here obsesses over details.

Thanks poppy. I'm very OCD and there are some "non-scale" aspects to this build that drive me nuts. Most are my own fault. I didn't realize that I had built and covered the rudder wrong until I was ready to put the registration number in place on the fin. I was looking at a picture of the number that the Carolina's Air Museum had emailed me when I saw the mistake. The front tip of the rudder should have been the top of the fin. Grrr! Also, the pushrod exits for the ailerons and elevator, while necessary for the working controls, are not authentic. I will not obsess, I will not obsess....

Don C., why did you sand them? Was it so the marker (great idea) would adhere better?
biplane guy, Comment for image # 3595617 May 16 07:21
rayl, I did Google "flat wire" as you suggested. I found a company that had just the thing but had discontinued the two smaller sizes that would have been about the right scale. Thanks for the tip.

I did sand them a bit and used a silver Sharpie to color them. Easier than a brush.

BiPlane guy: TRy Googling "Flat Wire" you will be surprised at the options out there. Bookbinding wire might work.

Don C., I found the Plastruct flat styrene strips you mentioned. They will have to be painted since they are white but I think they will be perfect. Thank you.

I used the dry transfers for the numbers on the fin. Works pretty well.

Well it seemed like a good idea at the time. The reality is that the film on which the printing is done is fairly thick and isn't able to conform to the irregular surface of the ribs and tissue. This resulted in massive bleeding under the edges. Also, the adhesive is VERY strong. When I removed it from the port side of the fuselage it took the doped finish with it right down to the underlying tissue where it made a small hole in a thankfully small area. It was fixable but disappointing. I printed the registration number for the fin because it was too small to paint on. When I put it in place it smeared and had to be done over, this time sprayed with a clear coat of Krylon before the application to the fin. Next time I'll try making a decal.

Hi guys, a friend is a guru on full scale, says the only thing it does is help support the fuel tank...
biplane guy, Comment for image # 3603713 May 16 15:35
Can anyone tell me what the function is of that strip above the fuel tank on a PT-17or N2S? Skyediamonds1985 asked me and I couldn't find an answer online.

- - - And, the question is?
biplane guy, Image # 3603713 May 16 15:30

Question

Yep. What Don said. Nice!

Thank you Lord Vader.
Don C, Comment for image # 3602512 May 16 09:49
Obviously you have come to the dark side. That's well done.
biplane guy, Comment for image # 3601810 May 16 15:39
You may have noticed that there is no "U.S." before the "NAVY". That's because the picture (also posted here) that I used to make the stencil for the lettering didn't include it. I wasn't aware it was supposed to be there until I looked at a picture of the other side of the plane. Duh.

I was going to glue some black sandpaper to the metal strips but found some non-slip tape by 3M that looked cool.
