Necessity must be the mother of invention!

Well, I'll be dipped, your creativity is astonishing!!!!

Very ingenious John. The Spirit is looking great.

This rubber band and string clamp seems to do the job. While the White glue dries I will fabricate aileron cranks.

I never realize how big the plane will be until it starts to come together. I was perplexed as to how to clamp the wing tips.
John M Oshust, Image # 498410 Nov 07 12:12

I laminated 4, 1/2 inch balsa bolcks for the W tips. I do not trust myself with a knife so I quickly shaped them on a small belt sander. Now I will glue them to the wing, final shaping by hand.

Great job, John....Lindy would be proud!!!!!

Ailerons installed first coat of primer on bottom wing.

The wing first fill and sanding.

You'll get no argument about the plastic. On this one, the B-25, the Cessna 172, and the Mosquito (that I know of) have plastic wing tips. I did use them on the Cessna because of their shape but I would not use the others simply because they don't look right and they would be a real bitch to blend in with the rest of the wing. It's so much simpler to make wing tips from balsa blocks and they certainly look better. The wing tips on the real Spirit are covered with fabric around what looks like one piece which forms the outline, just like another rib.

Thanks DD for the advice about the large wing decals. Your thought never crossed my mind. Off to the hills of PA for 4 days to try and decrease the turkey population. The wing gets covered upon return.
John M Oshust, Image # 495405 Nov 07 22:04

Seems like the wing will fit. Like DD I must make wooden end caps for the wing....Guillows plastic...again!

The Spirit has a wing. A few extra stingers and a large stringer just forward of the aileron spaces. I could not get 1/32 bass wide enough to cover in one piece so I had to adjust the stringers to hold a tight seam.

These a floral arranging pins. They are a bit long but cut easily to fit your building board. You can purchase them at a craft shop. I found them useful in building the Spirit wing.

What John does not like, he overcomes with ingenious tenancity!!!

I don't think John likes Guillows balsa.
John M Oshust, Comment for image # 494705 Nov 07 07:26
DD none of the wing thingies, spars, were marked or notched. I know the length is based on the box, the wood and Quality control is garbage!
David Duckett, Comment for image # 494705 Nov 07 06:28
The wingspan is 36", the box it came in is 20 and 1/4". I'm curious as to which notches Guillows forgot.
