I have concluded my paint test. Roughing up with sandpaper seems to help a little, as does a coat of crystal clear. But in any case you need to scrape with a hard object and a fair amount of force. Although for the Tyro I am thinking of leaving it clear, I like the look and it would simplify repairs.

Oh, and scratch tests show no significant difference between painting over smooth doculam and the side that I scuffed up with sandpaper. It won't flake off, but I can see it rubbing off in areas with frequent wear. Maybe a shot of crystal clear would help, I will test and see.

Wing weighed 39.4 grams before covering and is 50.3 grams fully covered, which works out to around 34 gsm. I need to patch some small areas with wrinkles, but that is ok as I need to get access to install the forgotten servos. :o

No cherries on these, at least nothing you'd want to eat. The climate here is conducive to real cherry trees though, along with many fruits and nuts.

I thought they might be cherry. Do they have cherries on them. I would love to have a cherry tree, but it's too warm here in southwest Texas.

Ummmm..........here this morning it was -20.....again. On top of the 3" of snow & ice from the previous night Welcome to a Manitoba spring!

Aileron covering has been fixed. The test block has been painted with 4 layers if thinned Liquitex. Brush marks are minimal, but an airbrush would be better.

Actually, since I have not inspected them closely it is probably best to just say they are "flowering cherry trees".

Japanese Flowering Cherry trees, possibly the "Royal Burgundy" cultivar.

Are those blossoms on those trees, they're beautiful. What are they?

45F here and it was hailing an hour ago, but you won't hear me complain. 70-80F is good for me and 90F or higher is just uncalled for.

Now we can tell that the aileron on the right was the first one I did and the one on the left is nearly perfect. The one on the right won't shrink anymore, but a little more heat on the left aileron should clear up those little wrinkles.

Covering the ailerons with Doculam (1.5 mil laminating film). Everything looks great from this angle, but that is the danger of a clear covering.

Joining the wing halves and adding dihedral. Now I'm glad I got the 36" long building board, at the time I wasn't planning on building a plane with a 36.25" wingspan.

I ended up with a left and a right wing half, that's a good sign. Rather than add webbing between spars the wing is actually build around an I-beam. These wings are very strong and have no droop.
SteveM, Image # 737726 Mar 08 22:49

Left wing construction, most joints have no glue yet.

The fuselage frame is complete for now, on to the wing. Small hatch is held on by magnets.

Very similar to the PT-40 from great Planes I built last spring. Good kits, great builds, and very fun to fly.

The Tyro 100 frame is basically a plywood box surrounded by balsa. But even the balsa sections are quite strong, notice the laminated bracing visible on the inside of the far wall. This gives me confidence that the Tyro will be a durable first flyer.

As you can see, I have decided to go ahead and build the MM Tyro 100 and learn to fly with it. I am told the MM Hellcat is a very good flyer but the Tyro will be easier to repair and I won't mind so much if I bang it up. Doculam is the covering of choice.
