I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

I should point out that the Aero Star came from Poppy, I just forwarded it.

The Tyro is repaired once again and tips the scales at 17.2 ounces with the A123 cells (3S1P 1100 mAh). The rather large piece of wood on the floor is a fuselage side from the Aero-Star .40 that DD so kindly sent me. Next flight is tomorrow morning.

Eventually, you will have this thing so tough, nothing will bend it. Super!!

I added some tabs at the rear of the hatch so those magnets are probably not needed. The velco patch helps keep the battery from sliding left and right, there really is no room for the battery to move up or to the front or rear so this might be enough.

The new battery hatch is held on all four corners with magnets and a 2-56 nylon screw in the front helps hold the hatch and and provides a handle.

The fuse is back together but I may need to spring for a replacement fuse if I keep running it into the ground. The servo tray was moved aft to make room for the battery, luckily I had left the nose wheel cable a little long.

Bummer!!

On my own for now with occasional suggestions from a member who has been at the field twice when I was there (he is one of the instructors). The club has training nights in May, starting a week from Tuesday. I plan to take advantage of this opportunity but at the very least have to get the proper AMA membership and would like to have my own plane though the club does have 3 trainers (I don't think any are electric).

Are you getting any flight training, or just trying to learn on your own? I joined a local club, and have been getting buddy box flying in only. Also, that sure is a small plane, I'm learning on a 63" wingspan trainer. The RealFlight RC simulator has taught me a ton as well.

Unfortunately the doctor is out of town for the weekend and repairs will have to wait till Monday at the earliest. For proper balance the battery needs to be just in front of the servos, which currently requires removing the wing to change batteries. I guess while I am repairing I might as well cut out a battery hatch.

OUCH! This is why I build for display. "Doctor Steve, Doctor Steve, please report....."

I didn't see this damage at first. All I can figure is the LE hit the fuse afte rthe wing popped off. This take more time to repair than the fuse as it requires a patch in the covering and repainting.

I don't mind crashing, but I hate it when it happens 2 minutes into your first flight and you have nothing else to fly. The white blob is the LiFe battery pack. Airframe weighs 12.3 oz, AUW was 13.7 oz on LiPo 640 mAh but is now 17 oz with 1100 mAh LiFe.
SteveM, Comment for image # 814601 May 08 21:18
Oh that was fun! On a fresh battery I got a 9.7 amp draw at 8.97 volts for 87 watts at full throttle. This is exactly what I need at the motor and ESC are rated 10 amps and I wanted to be around 75-100 watts. I set the ESC low voltage at 6 volts so it will protect the 2S LiPo in the MM Hellcat as well as 2 volts per cell on the LiFe, though I read they are pretty much out of juice at 2.5 volts/cell.

The correct batteries for the Tyro have finally arrived! No data yet on the increase in wattage and AUW, but they do weigh over 3 oz more than the tiny LiPo packs I was using. Max charge rate is 8C but 5C (5.5 Amps) is recommended.

No need to envy! Just grab yourself a kit from Mountain Models and you'll be airborne in no time.

Tis' a thing of beauty Steve. Moostang be green with envy. Keep 'em comin'.

This setup was still on the undersized LiPo batteries, myabe the 1100 mAh LiFe packs will arrive today and I can try them tomorrow. The prop is an APC 9070, but I am down to 49 watts due to a higher gear ratio slowing down the prop. I've been pondering the wind situation, I'm sure we saw no more than 4-5 MPH wind when I did this damage, but even at altitude it was a handful to control. Maybe the Aero-Star DD sent me would be better in the wind, but also would crash far far worse. Obviously I need a whole lot more experience flying, flying in wind, and landing. Would a heavier (5 lbs vrs 1 lb) plan be better? Any thoughts anyone?

The third flight I tried to do more runway passes but the wind was up to about 2-3 MPH and was shifting directions. I dipped a wingtip into the ground and broke the motor mount. A little CA got me in the air again but the wind got the better of me again.
SteveM, Image # 813801 May 08 15:43

The previous flight lasted about 4.5 minutes so the second flight I tried to do less full throttle and towards the end of the flight reduced power. I managed to get 6 minutes of air time. One bounce on the runway then a plop into the grass.
