Keep at it Steve. I think it took me about 3 months before I was not coming home from the field with a repair to make every time. I'm no expert now, but I can repeatedly take off and land without breaking anything. And touch and go's are amazing - an evening doing them in zero winds is the best! I much prefer the look of a tail dragger, but the Tyro's trike gear makes touch and go's really nice with the improved ground handling. So - keep at it - sounds like you're making good progress. Coupled with your amazing building skills, I can imagine some great flying pictures to come in the future.

At 9am two guys showed up with their gas planes. They are at the field nearly every morning and one guy said he tries to make 50 landings (touch and goes) a day. The other makes just as many landings each day and has been doing RC flying for some 38 years. So I was thrilled to get some advice from them as they watched me try to land. Now I need to take what they told me and practice. When the pilot lands the plane nose first something has to give. A new prop is almost $3 so I almost don't mind repairing the stick as it seems to be the weakest point. I'm afraid it I made the motor stick detach on impact I'd just end up transferring the crash energy to somewhere else. I'm getting pretty good at drilling out and installing new plywood to repair the stick, and the Aero-Star kit has given me enough repair plywood scraps to last for many rough landings to come.

Maybe magnets are the solution. Hold the vitals together so they break upon impact. May save work???

I guess this is what they call the joy of flight. It looks like a lot of fun!

Spent some time this morning practicing landings. On one landing I was not straight and messed up my touch down and it bounced and went nose first into the ground. I was actually able to glue and keep flying, break it again, re-glue, and repeat.

I was trying to land on the runway but was a little off to one side and clipped this little bank with the prop, breaking the motor shaft. I turned the Tyro around for this picture, but that's about where it came to rest.

This morning I got to the field at 0630 so it was still cool but the rising sun forced me to practice my landings headed from West to East. As you can see, my aim is better with the desensitised controls.

With the dual rates now set I am very close to what you have. About 1" rudder and 1/2" elevator and ailerons. I didn't get a chance to fly tonight but should be able to if I show up early Saturday morning before the work party since most people are gas and can't fly till 9am.

Steve : Rudder - 0.5" in each direction (1" total movement), Elevator - 0.25" in each direction (0.5" total), Ailerons - about 0.30" in each direction. So, you definitely have much more than I. I don't have an exponential on mine.
SteveM, Comment for image # 834514 May 08 15:03
Yes, those are the distances from one throw to the other (ie. full up/left to full down/right) without dual rates reducing the movement.
jgood, Comment for image # 834514 May 08 14:39
Is that from full up to full down, Steve?
SteveM, Comment for image # 834514 May 08 12:40
I get 1-3/8" on the rudder, 7/8" on the elevator, and 1" on the ailerons. The ailerons are in the outer most hole of the servo arm so I could reduce the throw by moving the linkage, but we just reduced the rate in the radio. When I got home I read my manual and figured out how to ad -30% exponential to each surface as well.Tonight is the monthly club meeting so I might get a chance to fly again tonight and relearn the feel of the controls.

Aha. Too much control movement. What are the deflection distances at the end of the rudder, elevator, and ailerons, in both directions, with the sticks at the stops? I'll measure mine tonight, and let you know what I've got.

Tonight was training night and I was pretty much the only student there. But the radios they had were not computerized and could not deal with my flaperon setup so I was left to fly on my own tonight. One instructor had me try to line up with the runway but my movements were not very smooth and I kept over correcting. I handed him the transmitter and it was instantly obvious that the controls were way too sensitive. With that plane on the ground we dropped the aileron and elevator dual rates to 50% from 100%. The response is much smoother now and I was actually able to line up and hit the runway several times before the broken motor stick ended my flying for the day.

Thanks to my lack of skill at the sticks James will have to make a "Rebuild" picture category just for me. I got into a spiral near the ground again and didn't get out of it like usual.

No, I was referring to the small lake at your feet. But I see you always see the glass as half-full, not half-empty. My kind of guy.
SteveM, Comment for image # 829710 May 08 19:19
Thanks, still needs painted but there is no reason to delay flying for that. Why would I need pontoons, are you worried about those little clouds? Rain is our friend, it keeps the fair weather people at home 364 days of the year.
sweetwillie, Comment for image # 829710 May 08 18:22
Looks like you'd better put some pontoons on it too.

Nice rebuild Steve!

Wow Steve, fast rebuild, looks great and your back flying.
