I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

Steve, I've been trying to find my meter so I can tell you what mine produces. I think you might be a little under prop'd, what do you think? Maybe try a 9070 prop, that's what I use. I think that battery should be OK, although obviously it will run out much quicker than the 2 cell 1320 batteries I use usually (I actually use a 3 cell battery with the camera on board - lots more power, although it wears out the motors quicker!). Power should be the same though - it's still 7.4V. Sometimes I use 870mAh 2 cells, and they have the same power available as the 2 cell 1320, it just runs for less time. The aircraft is nice and light with those small batteries though. What gearing are you using?

I saw a recommendation on RCGroups that at least 75 watts should be used and 100 watts or more would give a sportier performance. Looks like I am underpowered on account of the small capacity battery borrowed from the Hellcat, hopefully my Tanic A123 packs get here soon.

I finally purchased an essential "Watt's Up" meter so I know what kind of current and voltage the motor is actually seeing. With this 8x6 prop and the 2 cell 640 mAh LiPo battery at full throttle (static, not in flight) draws 7.8 Amps at 7.21 volts for a power of 56 watts. I have no idea if that is a lot or a little power, but at least I have real numbers to work with now.

The Tyro is repaired and ready to fly again. Based on the wind forecast very early Friday morning might be a good time to sneak out to the field to try again.

Poppy, if you tried sending last night then it could be part of the mess that happened when a spammer started using my email address in the "reply-to" on their spam. I have temporarily shut off that email account for now. Try emailing me at melizas@engr.orst.edu as I don't know what your email address is.

Some people use steel wool to rough up the surface, but a test I tried didn't show any improvement. Later I read about the vinegar and alcohol treatment, but since I didn't have vinegar I just wiped with alcohol to clean the plastic. For these patches I have used the vinegar + alcohol treatment. What is this about vinegar and alcohol? I have trouble with acrylics pulling up with the masking tape.

Steve, for some reason, My e-mail to you is not going out. Please send me an e-mail. I have a ? on canopy. Thanks.

Ready for paint, which is an obvious disadvantage to a painted RC model. This time around I am going to wipe with vinegar then alcohol to see if that improves paint adhesion.

Oh me, oh my!!

I pretty much figured on having to do repairs and I think I got off easy. Almost done fixing it, just need to apply covering patches and paint. The wind was forecast to be 3-4 MPH but when I got there it was clearly more then that, I guess I'll just have to work on the Hellcat while I wait. The RC club also has "trainer nights" in May, so in about 2 weeks I'll probably take advantage of that.

Sorry to see that Steve, but as you say, it doesn't look too serious. I remember when I was learning to fly, waiting for that calm morning was the hardest thing, and it was always the biggest mistake when I didn't wait. Use the R/C Model Flying Weather forecast link on the links page - it's very useful for picking a day. Not 100% accurate, but a good guide!

Had to take a break from time to time to let the weather pass. The club persident showed up and had no problem with his 5 lb gas plane. We both agreed that I needed a calm day for a maiden but once at the field you just can't pass up the temptation.

Lucky me, I hit the center of the only patch of blackberrys and bushes in the field and the LE found the biggest small tree in that patch. No serious damage, wing got ripped off and the fuse sides pulled apart just enough to pop loose everything inside.

It's about 100' from the runway to those trees so I immediately had to try to turn but ended up going in a circle as I embarked on my "crash course" of learning to fly. I was about to get pushed into those trees so I decided it was time to bring it down.
SteveM, Image # 785919 Apr 08 15:12

I started getting braver and tried to do brief lifts off the runway but the wind would push me and I'd end up crashing into the grass. Finally I decided it was time to try to get some height, it immediately turned downwind as seen here.

Burned up one battery (all of 5 minutes) getting the feel of the plane on the ground. Gusts of wind kept tipping it over onto one wing tip and I'd have to run over and set it back upright.

The Tyro prepares to taxi onto the runway.

Last Saturday it hit 84F, almost the hottest in 50 years. And now April snow on the valley floor. Cold and wet is the forecast, but there is also little wind for the next 3 hours so I might try to sneak out to the field.

I just tried WOT with an EP-9070 like James uses but after a second or two the ESC would trip on low voltage. This tells me I was near the 9.6 Amp rating of my battery. An EP-9047 seems to be fine though. I'm having to think about prop and gearing options as the LiFe cells will either give me 6.6 V for 2 cells or 9.9 V for 3 cells and I have a 4.50:1 gear ratio, etc... And here I thought picking out the proper sized rubber motor was challenging, but I like this challenge better.
