No one else was there, the sun was warm, it was quiet and peaceful. I got brave and flipped dual rates to high and did some rolls and a loop or two.

Tuesday afternoon it occurred to me that it was 45F, clear skies, no wind, almost sunset, and I'd rather fly than write a thesis.

I granted the Tyro a stay of execution with liberal use of CA, scotch tape, and a glue stick. The frost was so thick that walking on the mats was dangerous and a good puff of wind would have blown my flight box off the table.

Ah, she did you well. I knew of a guy who would chop the tail sections of his old aircraft and mount them on the wall like trophies!

They say not to fall in love with your first plane. I think the poor Tyro has had so many crashes and hanger rash events that it needs to be retired, I'd rather spend my time finishing up the Hellcat than address the structural issues.

I forgot to mention that what you are looking at is a piece of a broken prop that I found in the grass to hold the cable tight and a twist-tie from the garbage can to hold to battery. If I could have used CA I could have easily repaired the cable and patched the battery hatch back together. But what I really need to do is fabricate a proper battery retaining device.

43F and 1 MPH wind this morning, a touch warm but managable. Later the wind picked up and my landings got rougher which brought to light two issues. The nose wheel cable came loose and the batteries broke through the hatch, time to fix them properly.

Nice flying Steve. It looks like an impressive airfield you have there!

Disregard the 5 seconds, it was more like 2 seconds between pictures.

Five seconds later - headed out to line up for another touch. I was able to go home after about 45 minutes of air time as a mild tumble in the grass ripped off the wing and I opted not to do a field repair with CA on account of my allergy.

And go! (after a go then touch on the other end of the runway)

Touch (just after this picture was taken)

Lining up with the runway and adjusting the motor speed to achieve the desired glide path.

After a blustery weekend we finally got a calm morning so I took the Tyro to the field for more touch and go practice. Sorry about the blur, the camera defaulted to an ISO of 80, I will try again soon.

A strong West wind forced me to work off the East end of the runway, which is kinda where the sun comes up. After losing the plane in the sun several times and a wild ride in turbulent air I called it quits before even finishing half a battery pack.

It's not so much that I expect a failure as it is a safety measure that will hopefully never be needed. Even if a servo were to lock up mechanically I doubt the stall current would be enough to blow the fuse, but it also would not be enough to drag down the BEC and kill the receiver. But some day in the future, on this plane or another, with HS-55 or HS-5745MG servos, the brushes in a servo could fail and short out the BEC and receiver (I have heard of planes lost from bad servos). It's not an expensive or heavy safety feature so it seemed like a good idea to try it. Not to mention I don't like the idea of a high current power source and a load with no means of short circuit protection. If I ever have a multi-engine brushed plane you can be darn sure I will have a fuse for each motor and even an ESC for different pairs of motors if is a 4 engine. Maybe this is over kill, I'm sure servos don't short out very often and I could spend countless hours trying to protect against "what if".

I have been flying these little hs-55 for a year now, with no problems.

Never heard of this, why worried about failing a servo?
SteveM, Image # 867613 Jun 08 01:11

I decided to start putting slow blow fuses on my servos to protect against a failed servo. On these little HS-55's I'm using a 1 amp rating so I should never blow it under normal use. Has anyone ever done something like this before? Will it even help?

My reactions are not so bad anymore since I make sure I have some air movement pushing the fumes away from me. I noticed I was hit the worst when I was right over the area I was working on instead of being off to the side. So I make sure I keep my head off to the side when I use CA.
