In town there was almost no wind, but out at the field it was 5-10MPH with gusts to about 15MPH so I was unable to maiden and only took the Tyro up for about a minute. On the way home I stopped at this small field.

Thanks ws and poppy. I'm afraid it was too windy at the field to maiden, despite a 0-2 MPH wind forecast. One fella even got pushed so far downwind that he lost perspective, and the 77" SU-31 nosed into the ground in a neighboring field. I measured the throws after I got home, Rudder is +/- 1.125", Ailerons are +/- 3/8", and the elevator is 1/2" up and 5/8" down. I don't know why the elevator is not symmetrical, but I'd rather have it be a little off than the ailerons.

Beautiful job on the covering steve. you should be proud...

The smell of fresh paint and drying canopy glue fills the air as she wait for the dawn.

Covering the fuselage added only 2.1 grams. The paint test looks good so I am going to jump right into painting the rudder and the anti-glare area in front of the cockpit so that I can glue on the canopy.

I guess I could also add that the silver paint I am using on the plastic parts appears to be a reasonable match to the Solite color.

The going has been slow, but I think it is safe to say that the most challenging half is done.

Yes, I used Doculam on the Tyro and Hellcat. Doculam is clear and needs painted so I think I'll just try painting the Solite test piece and see how that goes.

Steve...Have you ever tried Ducolam??? Manzano recommends it.
SteveM, Comment for image # 950324 Oct 08 19:37
Right now the rudder is covered in silver Solite. I have read that you can paint Solite so I am preparing a test patch, but would I be better off to use a scrap of red Monokote? I guess a third option is to go buy another roll of covering, but I'd rather not.

It's not perfect, but I think I'm off to a good start. In hindsight these were probably some of the more difficult surfaces to cover so maybe I should have started at the front.

Thanks Moos. I looked up the system requirements for G4.5 and while I have three computers that meet the minimum specs, none is very close the being optimal. Since they should run G4.5 fairly well I should probably part with the $200 (or whatever it is) at get a real flight sim. I don't trust the free one I have been using as I find the ME-109 easier to fly than the high wing slow flyer which seems a little bass ackwards to me.

Best of luck on the flight attempts there Steve,I'm sure all will turn out for the best. Recently purchased a Real Flight G4 simulator and the difference between flying a high wing trainer vs. the low wing warbird or sport would have cost me a small fortune. QUITE a difference. I am definitely following this build closely and learning quite a lot after researching what electric flight entails. Thanks.

The deadline for the G challenge is 8 days away. The plan is to maiden this weekend if the weather permits. If it flies poorly and crashes I will repair it, paint it, and add detail and enter it as a non-flying model. Should it fly reasonably well and survive my attempts to land I will finish paint and details, take baby photos, then fly again to get flight times for the contest.

The battery on the far left was my initial choice when I planned to only do electric FF. The battery on the right was purchased for the MM Hellcat and was pressed into service to support the higher power demands of the RC conversion. The pack in the middle was recently purchased in an attempt to find a battery that is a better match for this plane. It weighs 0.32 ounces less than the 640mAh battery but only has about 3/4 of the energy which will give shorter flights. The TP Prolite 3S 480mAh would probably be a better match, but the $40 price tag caused me to pass it up.

Battery options from left to right: 2S 300mAh 20C, 3S 350mAh 20C, and 2S 640mAh 15C.

Covering the fuselage was delayed a few days while I scalloped the formers and added some basic cockpit details. I'm afraid this is about all the detail I have the time and weight budget for.

My left cheek has more wrinkles and I sand them weekly....I do not think you have a major issue here.
poppy, Comment for image # 956720 Oct 08 17:47
Well, If this is the worst, I wouldn't worry about it. Some light sanding w/400-600 grit paper should eliminate. The covering looks great.
