I think all is working again now. Please leave a comment on a photo somewhere if something you need is not working still.

Thinned Titebond glue (didn't have any Elmers white glue) brushed over the thread and paper. Not to liberally!
rayl, Image # 3556510 Feb 16 11:22

Thread woven around the brads, overlaying teh 50# bond paper.

Even though I struck out on my quest for Nitrate dope in SF, I did find this pure cotton 3/0 machine thread. It is supposed to absorb aliphatic glue better than other (rayon) threads.

Next, laid some 50# bond paper over the parchament. I think that next time I will use standard 20# paper. Can you see where I'm heading?
rayl, Image # 3556210 Feb 16 11:17

Covered the face of the board with parchament paper to prevent glue sticking to it.

I feel like a cobbler. Small brads driven into the edge of the board at every other 3/32" mark.
rayl, Image # 3556010 Feb 16 11:12

Defaced the fine looking board with some lines: 3/32" on both faces.

Fine looking piece of board,eh? Lets see what I can do with it.

Butyrate is fuel proof. Nitrate is not.You can apply Butyrate over Nitrate, but not Nitrate over Butyrate.

RE dopes: Sky's statement is wrong. Nitrate is used for prep work and butyrate for finish. The dopes are not the same. You can easily find complete info on the SIG website, sig.com. You CAN use either for covering but butyrate shrinks more.

Nice to know that my 70-mile round-trip to the "local hobby" store pales by comparison to your trip. I live in Reno, but the hobby store is in Carson City. There are a couple of "hobby stores" in Reno, but they're geared to R/C cars and four-wheel off road "toys" (my humble opinion).

You can still use Butyrate dope as well as Nitrate. I've used both with success. To me, anyway, doesn't make much difference; dope is dope. If all else fails, you can order online. I know its a hassle, but: as you said, SIG is still around: SIG mfg. co. is in Montezuma, Iowa, 50171. Its just that you cannot mix the two together. Crazy as it sounds, (Correct me on this) you can add your first coat of Butyrate dope, then when the Butyrate dope completely dries, the succeeding coats can be Nitrate on top. But you cannot add do the reverse, that is: first coat be Nitrate and then add Butyrate on top.

SO, I make the two hour trip to Sioux Falls yesterday to take the wife to a Mall and I can visit the one Hobby Shop that is still open within a 150 mile radius. TUrns out that there is nice young guy managing it now but when I pointed out that he was out of Nitrate Dope, he wanted to know if that was a brand name or the name of it's manufacturer (sigh). We are truly dinosaurs. At least Drodak & Sig are still around.

Thanks for the compliment and offer Sky. I already have the engine, etc. in hand or planned but am in no hurry to get to them.

Rayl, got to admire your willingness to challenge yourself to take on such unusual projects. Hope you don't mind if I offer: to review the posts of John O's "How To" on this website for building radial engines in addition to my postings of the engine on the PT-17. I took a few pictures to be posted on my S.E. 5 construction especially for your build insofar as rigging. Don't know how far you will to go in the detailing, but the pixs will offer some viewpoints on rigging and fabrication of "turnbuckles." Take a peek on the S.E. 5 postings and hopefully will give you an alternative. -Sky
